I'm going to NYC in May and my teacher said not to carry a purse or bag because I would get robbed instantly. Any truth to that?

I'd rather rob the teacher - she's bound to have more money than the students - she probably can't run as fast as her students either.

I thought the same thing several years ago when I visited NYC for the first time. There was a bad crime problem there a couple of decades ago and it truly was a dangerous place to walk around without awareness of one's surroundings at all times. But, when I visited the city, I jogged it from end to end and side to side with my son and I reassure you that NYC is as safe a place to be in public as any other major city. Someone's done a great job making the city a more safe and pleasant place to visit and live in. You're going to love your visit. That city is amazing. It has an energy like no other city in the world. Don't go there worrying about getting mugged. Go there to enjoy the sights, and just be mindful of all the personal safety tactics that you should be employing everywhere everyday anyway, such as being aware of what and who's around you, not leaving your hotel room unlocked, not getting into cars with strangers, you know, the basics. It's not a bad place. I envy you. I wish I could go back to visit.

If you bring something reasonable like a book-bag that will let you hold your personal things all together in one place, than you shouldn't worry about anyone taking anything from you. In fact, New York City is actually the second largest city in the United States that is the safest. I don't think that your teacher should be teaching you that, because just like in N.Y.C you could get robbed in your own neighborhood too.. lol!

New York City is no more dangerous than any other city as long as you do not participate in dangerous activities. Stay in places where there are plenty of people, don't present yourself as "weak" or "vulnerable". Stay with others whenever possible and enjoy the experience.

for the period of the day, the massive apple subway is positive as long as there are a number of human beings around. stay far off from the factor and fake such as you belong there. At evening, i does not propose it for communities smaller than 4-5 human beings. The subway is below consistent video surveillance, yet that may not help while you're donning an iPod and retaining $a hundred costs on your hand. be careful.

No! That's silly. I have lived here for a year and never once had an issue or a time where I was very concerend for my safety. Just be street smart, as you would in any other place.

Has your teacher ever been to the city? I thought not. New York is very safe, don't believe the hype.
