If you're going to be there for a week/almost a week, I'd definitely get the 7-day unlimited MetroCard for the subway, which I believe is $24. Otherwise, there's the unlimited 1 day MetroCard for $7. If you go to http://www.mta.info/ they have all kinds of information about the subway/buses and fares. Taking the subway is the easiest and quickest way to get around. They have maps in the stations you can take and it's very easy to figure it out.
I'm not sure when you're going there, but the nine major NY museums are free from 6-9 pm the second Tuesday in June. I know the MOMA is free on Friday evenings from 4 -8 pm and most museums offer discounts for students if you're one.
You can take the free Statten Island ferry to see some great views of NYC and the Statue of Liberty (then of course take the ferry back). You can also see some great views if you take the subway to Brooklyn Heights and walk on the Brooklyn Promenade. While you're over there, there's an excellent pizza place, Grimaldi's, just down the hill.
Some other places that are great to visit, Little Italy (GREAT Italian food), top of the Empire State Building, Central Park (especially Sheep's Meadow), Times Square, Chinatown (cheap, cheap shopping), the Upper West Side and Ground Zero. I guess it depends on what you're looking to do. There are some great travel books you can buy with maps.
Have fun! =)

If you are staying for at least five days, get an unlimited ride Metrocard which will let you ride the buses and subways as much as you want over that time.
You should also get a CityPass:
http://www.citypass.com/city/ny.html
If any of the attractions are something you would want to do, it is a great deal!
The other ways to economize - take advantage of any free meals that your hotel offers. Try and avoid eating in the Times Square area - it is totally overpriced, even for pizza. Head east or west to the more residential areas for better priced meals. And take advantage of early bird specials and happy hours - some bars will have free food!
Several museums will have "pay what you can" or free nights:
At MoMa - admission is free for all visitors during Target Free Friday Nights, sponsored by Target, every Friday evening, 4:00–8:00 p.m. Tickets for Target Free Friday Nights are not available in advance.

definitley get a subway pass. also, look up places you would like to visit and research ahead of time and call to see about the prices. stay in a hotel thats not in time square, but a few blocks away because you can always take the subway which is fast.

The city sells a transit pass for $7.50 that allows you to ride buses, subway until 2am the next day. It's a great deal, especially in Manhattan.
Have fun.

Check out Shakespeare in the park. It is free and it is great!
BTW if you don't get on the (long) line to pick up free tickets in the AM, go to the stand-by line (right in front of Delacorte Theatre) at about 6:30 PM.
