I m planning a trip to NY city, anyone know any good hotels in NY, or in NJ-- closer towards NY city? If I stay in New Jersey, how long will it take me to get to times square or JFK airport? Does the New york water taxi stop in New Jersey?

I have a flight that departs at 8:00pm. I get off of work at 5:00pm which gives me 3 hours to get there, check-in, and board. I want to find the easiest or fastest way to get there so I have enough time to do everything. I am coming from the city, so I don't have a car which means I have to use some sort of public transportation. Any help is much appreciated! I've heard some people use buses from Grand Central, any information on this is helpful also. THANKS!

I would like to visit New York this coming March, but I havent traveled much. Id like to stay for 1-2 weeks, but I really dont plan on buying much. Just essencials, perhaps a few little fun things. I dont really plan on any expensive attractions either. Mostly just sight-seeing. And I dont need expensive food. Just essencials. And Im not horribly picky.

So with everything (hotel, estimate on food and taxi services, etc...) what could I expect to spend?

I'm writing a story that takes place in New York City. ...Only I've never been there. I need to know how the subway system works. Do a lot of children use it to get to school? How much do tickets cost? Do you buy a season pass type thing or do you have to buy a new ticket each time you use it? Are the subway stations usually large? Are they noisy? All information is appreciated. Thanks!
