Yes, it is really safe. I think it is number 2 or number 3 on the safest large cities to live in list. Now, I think it's less safe for visitors than for people who actually live here, because there is a street savviness that people who have grown up here or lived here for a while acquire, which unsuspecting tourists lack. Sometimes their naivete about the city can get them in trouble, but if you are cautious and street smart, then it is a very safe place to visit.

It's really no different than any other place regarding safety. Just returned from New York and had no problem - was walking in the area of Times Square very late at night and felt very safe. ('m a female) But one needs to be aware of ones surroundings no matter where you are in the world. However, New York has cleaned up it's act regarding safety - there were 2 policemen on every block and apparently the crime rate has gone down.
New York would be fun to live in - tons of things to do and lots and lots of people - but it is one of the most expensive places in the U.S. to live. Hope this helped. :)

Yes. I'm a native. Once you become familiar with the city you develop a new skill set. There are some streets you do not walk on alone after dark; you do not flash money; you move in the same direction as the rest of the traffic on the street, etc. It becomes second nature. On any given day there are more than 8 million people in the city. You can do the math. The odds of something negative happening are teensy.

It snoes al ot. That's where the two towers crashed. I think that's where Cory Ridle died a few weeks ago. It's a nice place to visit. But not to live.
Glad to help!
