I would like to visit New York this coming March, but I havent traveled much. Id like to stay for 1-2 weeks, but I really dont plan on buying much. Just essencials, perhaps a few little fun things. I dont really plan on any expensive attractions either. Mostly just sight-seeing. And I dont need expensive food. Just essencials. And Im not horribly picky.

So with everything (hotel, estimate on food and taxi services, etc...) what could I expect to spend?

I know nothing about hotel costs but you can live cheaply while you are here. Honestly, there is rarely a reason to take a cab. It's a big waste of money. You can buy a 7-day MetroCard subway pass for $24 (unlimited rides), the cost of 1 or 2 cab rides.

There's plenty of cheap food where you don't need to tip waitstaff. Things like pizza and falafel are the cheapest. It is totally possible to spend $10/day on food if you don't eat much and have self control (I have when I was broke) There are plenty of great restaurants where you order your food at the counter, not just fast food places. If you're here for over a week, it might be worth it to go grocery shopping and keep some food in your hotel room. Eat something before/after you go out.

If you're a big drinker or like bars, it's hard to spend less than $40 on a night out. If you are a smoker, bring a carton because cigarettes average $7/pack here.

So without cabs (subway/bus instead), expensive restaurants, bars or attractions that cost $ you can actually survive on less than $150/week (not including hotel costs) I used to make $200/week at my old job so I know this.

You need to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They have a suggested donation of $20 but it is entirely optional. You can give them $2 and they don't care.

depends on what hotel you stay in. NYC hotels are not cheap. You are looking at $200 a night easy. So 2 weeks thats going to be between $2000 and probably $4500 depending on where you stay. If you get waiter and waitress service for dinner expect $30 per person at least.

Its definately not a cheap place to visit.

Depends if your there 1 or 2 weeks but I would say 3 to 4 thousand easy, you're on a trip you don't want to have to pinch pennies the whole time. Have fun splurge a little.

Your main expense is the hotel service. Stay in Chinatown it's cheapest. Also stay away from tourist-y places to eat more so the less will it be expensive (25$ for so-so salad).

First, go to http://tripadvisor.com for reviews from other travelers.
Then, go to http://Luxe.worldventures.com They search all the other main sites like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, hotel and airline sites and offer you the lowest price. You’ll save even more when you book it as a package like air and hotel together.
