I am planning a short weekend trip to N.O. with my kids, and want to put together an itinerary including places to see, things to do, hotels to stay in within walking distance of everything, etc. I don't want to drive around, but rather stay in a safe, central location. Any suggestions...?

I am going this weekend and I am curious to know what is still going on. This is my first time back since the storm. Let me know if you have any good ideas on food and things to see/do. Also- does La Freniere Park in Metairie look good? Are there still tons of birds there?

-Your sunglasses fog up when you step outside.

-You reinforce your attic to store Mardi Gras beads

-You save newspapers, not for recycling but for
tablecloths at crawfish boils.

-When you give directions you use "lakeside and
riverside" not north &south.

-Your ancestors are buried above the ground.

-You get on a green trolley car to go to the park and a
red one to the French Quarter.

-You take a bite of five-alarm chili and reach for the
Tabasco.

-Every once in a while, you have waterfront property.

-You sit down to eat boiled crawfish and your host says,"Don't eat the dead ones," and you know what he means.

-You don't learn until high school that Mardi Gras is
not a national holiday.

-You push little old ladies out of the way to catch
Mardi Gras beads.

-Little old ladies push YOU out of the way to catch
Mardi Gras beads.

-You leave a parade with footprints on your hands.

-You believe that purple, green, and gold look good
together.

-Your last name isn't pronounced the way it's spelled.

-You know what a nutria is but you still pick it to
represent your baseball team.

-No matter where else you go in the world, you are
always disappointed in the food.

-Your town is low on the education chart, high on the
obesity chart and you don't care because you're No. 1 on the
party
chart.

-Your house payment is less than your utility bill.

-You know that Tchoupitoulas is a street and not a
disease.

-Your grandparents are called "Maw-Maw" and "Paw-Paw."

-Your Santa Claus rides an alligator and your favorite
Saint is a football player.

-You cringe every time you hear an actor with a Southern
or Cajun accent in a "New Orleans-based" movie or TV show.

-You have to reset your clocks after every thunderstorm.

-You're walking in the French Quarter with a plastic cup
of beer.

-When it starts to rain, you cover your beer instead of
your head.

-You eat dinner out and spend the entire meal talking
about all the other good places you've eaten.

-You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other
friends from Louisiana.

I am looking for a hotel that I used to stay at back in the day. I think it may be called Avenue Plaza but I may be wrong. It was on St Charles Ave in the Garden District. If not, can you recommend a great hotel in the area.? We are gearing up for Jazz Fest BABY!!

I received an email saying a revival broke out in New Orleans due to a march that was started from Pastor Billy Graham. Do you know if there is any fact to this?

Going there next week for a bachelor party. When I was there 4 years ago, one of the Bourbon Street gentlemen clubs advertised this service "Receive a bucket of soapy water and a sponge and wash down one of the girls" I think this sounds hilarious for the groom-to-be.

and more generally, Jefferson parish.

from a brief look at a map, Metairie and jefferson parish look just as large and densly populated as New orelans proper.

Would visiting Metairie and Jefferson Parish help broaden my perspective of the area? or should I stick to New orleans proper?

We hear that parts of New Orleans are rather dangerous for tourists, and we don't want to take any stupid risks, but we do want to do what tourists do ... eat in charming restaurants, shop, visit museums etc. Can we safely walk around in the Vieux Carre during the day, or evening?
