Okay, for those of you who don't live here in the Katrina ravaged areas (I live in south MS), the TV news cannot convey how horrific things are. My brothers-in-law/sister-in-law all lost everything to Katrina. Some of them are still living in FEMA trailers. Too much rebuilding, too few contractors. Sometimes, the contractors just don't show up after they say they will, so ya have to start all over looking for someone. Some areas don't have hotels for workers to stay in, so how can more contractors come in if there is no where to stay? Few stores open to purchase supplies!!!! Wal-mart on the coast is a huge tent. Yep, a tent. I won't say the government doesn't play a part in it all, but there are multiple factors. My biggest complaint: when tragedy strikes in foreign countries, we send billions of dollars in assist, when that money should be kept right here at home in preparation for catastrophe. And, as for "Rodney Row's" comment about the ghetto....obviously you have never set foot in New Orleans.....

the same reason that the French Quarter shut down for a week, and the troops are still in Iraq, the government is a corrupt business, and the People dont matter!! I am from there, went to visit during Mardi Gras, there were sooo many people there, it was like, Katrina who? I drove 10 minutes away from the French Quarter where I as well as my family once lived, and err umm, we were the only people in the area! Go figure...

New Orleans and Katrina showed us how unprepared for that large of a scale of emergency we were. Also, it shows us that if there is an emergency anywhere in the world we (the US) is there to help get the mess cleaned up pronto, but if its our own country, the US cares, but they are wrapped up in so much red tape to help that they don't end up helping at all. We still can't manage to help all the people, but many ungovernment agencies are trying to help and many college kids go down to New Orleans to help during Spring Break.

The reason the cleanup and rebuilding of "The Big Easy" is of the governmental quagmire that chokes our gov't from doing anything here in the states for our own people. Plus you have local politician's, and "big contractors" that line their own pockets with the money first before any of it goes to the rebuild and cleanup. I know of a couple of smaller contractors personally that have tried to help out down there and have been threatened and run off by both of the for mentioned parties!

I believe that the government has used a very large percentage of the money for the war in Iraq, so that just make New Orleans sol.

It's such a monumental job it may be a couple of years until its done. The San Francisco quake took many years to recover from as well as the Chicago fire. Big job big time big money

The United States has decided to use $112 million dollars for cleanup and recovery, of this less than half has been spent or given in the area. The Iran war is costing $300 Billion for clean up and rebuilding. All I can think of is that we don't care much about predominately poor people of any color unless they have oil under them.

Bureaucracy
No one outside of NOLA cares anymore
Most of the people that lived in those areas fled and have not returned
Insurance companies refusing to pay claims

Because the people who lived in those areas aren't getting off thier butts and doing anything about.

That's why.

They're waiting for gub'ment handouts before they do anything productive in thier communities.
