New Orleans has never exactly been a safe city. With a smaller population after Katrina, even though the actual number of crimes is less than it used to be, the crime rate has gone up. However, if you use common sense you'll be fine. You want to avoid the same things you'd avoid in any large city. Stay away from deserted areas (such as those that have not been re-settled since the hurricane) and avoid poor residential areas. If you stick to the main tourist areas (the French Quarter, Central Business District, Garden District, and other places near the river), you shouldn't have much problem. It has always been true that the areas just beyond the French Quarter boundaries (beyond Rampart and Esplanade Streets) are not wise to venture into. You're also best off to avoid back streets and alleys even in the French Quarter--but that's the same sort of advice you'd be wise to follow anywhere. One thing tourists often do want to see that can be dangerous are the New Orleans cemeteries. The wisest way to see the cemeteries is on a tour, as crime can happen in them.

If you are staying in New Orleans, just stay around the French Quarter and you will be fine. Avoid dark streets and dark alleys. The New Orleans Police is very present in the quarter. If you plan on renting a car, you can go out of the city to Metairie or Kenner. Just get on I-10 and go west. Kenner has a very nice casino called the Treasure Chest and a large mall called the Esplanade. Also Metarie has two malls called Lakeside mall and Clearview mall. Kenner and Metairie are much nicer areas to visit.

Basically the crime really isn't that bad. To be totally honest all the crime you hear about on the news is in the "darker'' parts of town and usually have something to do with drugs. Seriously just stay to the french quarter or uptown/garden district area and you'll be fine!

It is not that bad
I have gone to New Orleans almost every single weekend since a month after Katrina and I have not seen anything bad
and when I go to Bourbon it is just me and a friend
The neighborhoods that are crime infested are hard to get to
if you stick to the main roads and avoid dark backstreets you should be fine
all the roads around the quarter and bourbon are fine too

Yes .. like Barry and Michael C said... just use common sense like you would in anyother city. The French Quarter is great... usually packed and pretty safe during the day. and at night.. just stick with the crowds..dont walk where there is no light.
i live just north of new orleans.. i go there very often for entertainment .. for years now.. and have never experienced any crime.

I'm not going to le to you, crime is pretty bad right now.Always have your guard up.Be aware of your surroundings at all times. The French Quarter is fairly safe at night but I would avoid small side streets. If you are going to Bourbon at night stay on Bourbon, don't wander. If a street looks dark, don't go on it.It might be a good idea to map out routes from where you are staying to your destination if you are walking.

You must stay on the busy streets. Avoid the back streets and alleys.
There are enough Police around to ask where to go and get directions.
I'll bet you love it:)
