I am planning a short weekend trip to N.O. with my kids, and want to put together an itinerary including places to see, things to do, hotels to stay in within walking distance of everything, etc. I don't want to drive around, but rather stay in a safe, central location. Any suggestions...?

The best places to visit in New Orleans with children are Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, Audubon Zoo and Entergy IMAX Theatre. The aquarium has a new Adventure Island area where you can pet young stingrays and a baby nurse shark. The Imax theatre is right next door. The zoo features a Louisiana Swamp Exhibit with white alligators and much more. Storyland in City Park just re-opened as well. The National World War II Museum and the Children's Museum are fun as well. You might want to check out neworleansonline.com and request their free Good Times Guide. Enjoy your trip!

The Audubon Zoo should be great. It was undamaged by the hurricane, and is back in full business. It is a distance from the CBD area, but easy to get to using public transportation or a cab. (If the streetcars were back up and running to that area, that would have been a good sightseeing trip to and from, but they are not up yet.)

And ignore the stupid a s s that said don't drink the water. New Orleans water system is fully restored since the storm. There is nothing wrong with the water.

Always a stand-by is the Aquarium...plenty of downtown hotels that you can walk from. I prefer the Zoo. You might be able to find a B&B uptown...let the kids terrorize the park across from the zoo, or run up and down the levees.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. I live 18 miles south of New Orleans and work even closer. I especially would not walk around downtown with children. The crime level is completely out of control (post Katrina is much worse than before). Everyday there are reports of robberies, murders, and other violent crimes on the local news.
