Being inspired by my English teacher, I've decided that I will spend some years (I'm thinking 4) to simply living abroad. Any words of wisdom?

I did this in my 20's & no problem, but I'm in my late 30's now so a little wary & only want to meet other women (straight ones!) not men as too risky. When I was backpacking in my 20's quite frankly people in the hostels used to look at older people travelling alone (& there were very few of them) as though they were weirdo's & did not engage them in conversation. I have to say that all the ones I saw were weirdo's though (or maybe they started out normal & after months of no one talking to them they turned weird!). I'm just normal so will I be seen as ok or will people think at her age she should be travelling with a partner, why hasn't she got one, is she weird/mental/an alcoholic?

- its a long plane flight away
- it may be emotional becuause I will meet old friends
- the break in my current typical north american routine scares me a wee bit
-i will miss my "usual stuff- bed, kitchen" etc.
is this normal? how do i cope with it? I almost feel that i should not start any thing new at this time becuase I am going on a trip.

Me and Andrew are going on vacation to Hawaii soon. We are worried that someone might break into the house since we are going to be gone for 2 weeks. We are taking the cats and dogs to my mom's house along with the fish. She loves animals. But, we are worried about the belongings. We have these ideas to keep the house safe:
1) Sign that says "BEWARE OF DOG"
2) Food bowl and water bowl
3) Close all the drapes and windows
4) Turn on some lights and the TV so it seems like we are there.
5) Keep 1 car in the garage
6) Alarm system will be on AT ALL TIMES
7) My cousin will visit twice a week.
Any other ideas!?! We are really worried.
(PS: Yes we will lock the doors and windows. I am also taking a lot of my jewelry with me and my work laptop. Andrew is also taking other important items that could easily be stolen)

I'm thinking about moving to a new place. Not sure where. What i'm looking for is:
- Somewhere near water, sea or a lake.
- Mountains would be good too.
- Quiet, with bike trails.
- Night life within half hour's drive.
- Good international food.
- Not overly expensive
- People that leave you alone
- Safe, strict gun laws, no crazy drivers
- Good health care system
- Tropical to cool weather would be nice. Not sweltering hot and no crazy cold.
- An international crowd
- Not the USA
- Work opportunities would be good, but not necessary
Your help would be appreciated
