Anyone want to give me some tips for dirtbaggin it across America such as how to be thrifty and just some tricks in the book.

Even if you are not driving!
One really big tip. Join the Auto club, that's AAA. they have great services and once you have the card you are eligible for discounts just about every where. they will help you with mapping, hotels, campground, attractions and many other things that you have not thought about and all of this is part of their service.
I don't work for these guys but I think their service is the best and having a AAA card really simplifies going anywhere in the US and other parts of the world for that matter.
