I have been looking on the net and it seams that accommodation in Darwin is realy expensive? Why is that?

I am planning to live in Syndey for two years for work. I am planning to take public transportation during my stay there or walk to places nearby. I would like to live near work or be able to travel to work quickly. I will be working in the Darling Harbour area. I would like a place that has great sites and fresh markets/groceries. I'm not a party girl and don't really go clubbing, so I quiet area is preferred. However, I am a huge beach volleyball player, so would like a place by the beach if possible.

During my stay, I would also like to see other places in Australia and would like to know if I would require a car in the long term or if I could get by on train or bus to see other places.

My wife has been offered a job in Australi. However, she has lupis and her bloodwork would not be covered by private insurance. Does anyone have any idea what a doctor's visit costs if insurance covers 0% of her visit.
