I am planning to live in Syndey for two years for work. I am planning to take public transportation during my stay there or walk to places nearby. I would like to live near work or be able to travel to work quickly. I will be working in the Darling Harbour area. I would like a place that has great sites and fresh markets/groceries. I'm not a party girl and don't really go clubbing, so I quiet area is preferred. However, I am a huge beach volleyball player, so would like a place by the beach if possible.

During my stay, I would also like to see other places in Australia and would like to know if I would require a car in the long term or if I could get by on train or bus to see other places.

I am not familair with Sydney accommodation scene but form what I heard, if you want to live near Darling Harbour - as you requested, you might find the cost quite expensive. However, Sydney suburban trains - while many people complain about them - is the cost effective method for commuting from the outer suburbs.

Any place near the beach might be even more difficult to find - especially ones with reasonable cost. Again, trains and ferry across the harbour is the way to go.

As fas as see "other places in Australia" - how far do you want to go? This country is the size of continental USA. A car will be good fro weekend trips to see up and down the east coast and some inland places. But if you are looking at say, Uluru - you will have to use train or plane. Queensland - you can drive but it is a long way.

Have a look at the map - see how big we are and how far apart places are.
Cheers and see you around.

Getting to work quickly near Darling Harbour means you are not going to be close to a beach. Even so, it is easy to get to beaches by public transport. Look at the inner city suburbs - Glebe, Ultimo, Newtown, Redfern, Surry Hills, Paddington, East Sydney, Woolloomooloo etc. All have easy public transport access to Darling Harbour and you would be able to walk there from most in less than 45 minutes. The inner eastern suburbs - Surry Hills, East Sydney, Paddington are on the direct bus routes to Bondi, Coogee and Clovelly beaches but with a change of bus or train, all the inner suburbs connect well to the beaches. There are markets in many areas and there is always Paddy's Market near Darling Harbour at weekends.

By the way, it is called "transport" in Australia, not "transportation". Transportation was the sentence given to many of the unwilling first settlers in Australia and it has never lost that meaning.

Manly is perfect for you. It has heaps of volleyball nets permanently set up on the beach and you can take the ferry to work - it takes 1/2 hour to get to circular quay and then 5 minutes to darling harbour and is a lovely way to get to work.

Don't rely on public transport to see Australia. Your best bet would be to fly to where you want to go then rent a car while you are there. Car rental is around $50 AUD/day

You can try places like Dee Why and Manly. They're pretty near the sea. :)
