My dad just took our whole family to Australia for 3 weeks. He worked soooo hard to make it perfect, such as taking us on tours, scuba diving at the great barrier reef, going to th opera house, going out to dinner every night, and so so soo much more. I want to get him a present to show him how thankful I am for him doing this for us. Any ideas?

I haven't been to Surfer's Paradise in Queensland for about 17 years now; I was looking online and it seems awfully cheesy now. Of course I expect change after all that time but it just doesn't seem to be... a good change. Does anyone know if it has gotten tacky or if it's just the way it seems on the websites I have found?

on television. The one thing that bothers me is that from TV, I have heard there are so many poisonous snakes and spiders. It is really that bad? Honestly, are they just mainly in the woods or ranches, or do they inhabit the cities and towns as well? Or is this just sensationalized for a story on TV?

Hi all,
My husband and I have been looking at nursing jobs in Australia and one clinic is prepared to offer us sponsered migration.
What i want to know is...is it best for us to agree to sponsered migration visa or should we get skilled migration visas?

If we were to were to have sponsered visa's can we still apply for permanent residency in Australia? Or do we have to have skilled migration visas to do that?

Basically our aim is to both work as nurses in Australia but to also become perminent residents too as we want to stay and not return to Uk. We would sell our property here and everything in order to set up home in Australia.

I am just rather confused about which visas to have?

I'm going with a friend and we intend to rent a car and drive there and stay for a night or two at Hunter Valley in Aug. Am looking for the best accommodation in town that offers the best value-low in price, good location and clean & comfortable. Any suggestions on what to do there other than visiting wineries since Aug is still winter month? How much can one expect to spend for this visit?

and would like some advice on where to stay and what to do and see while I am there. Is there any night-life? Besides aquatic activities are there any other fun things to do like bicycling or hiking? Is it fairly easy to get around without having to rent a car? How is the food and the shopping? Ok, I think I've asked enough. The most comprehensive and detailed response gets my nod for best answer. Thanks!

I have been living in New Zealand for a few years now and I am impressed by the scenery and the earnest working mentality of the people, which lends itself to doing some pretty fabulous work. I also feel the Kiwis are an amazing bunch when it comes to giving real help where it actually counts.

Having lived in places with real esteem before though (New York, Phoenix, Vancouver, Stockholm, London) I miss an element of poise and pride here - and lived reason. People play with their- and other people's lives the way the drive here, and I feel I'm not safe because of it.

Would Australia provide me with a more settled and responsible environment?

I've come to New Zealand from the UK, and frankly, I am horrified by the driving here. People are screeching around corners they know nothing about at speeds that will surely kill them and anything they encounter there, should there be anything, and they just fly down the residential streets at speeds I'd be scared to do on divided motorways (and I lived in Germany for 13 years and know what it's like to travel at 200km/h).
I'm planning to visit Sydney in two weeks.
Do I need to bring tranquilizers and blindfolding gear and take a cab, or do you reckon I'll be OK with a rental car?

going on the massive increase of british immigration into aus, britain must be more rotten than it normally is, or are we witnessing a 2nd wave of colonisation by the british. Will british migrants soon be hunting down & murdering Aborigines, as they 'courageously' did in the 20th century?

I am about to move to Australia with my company and my US driver's license is suspended for 3-6 more months in the US (not for a DUI or anything serious) My question is, can I get an Australian Driver's License without having my US license when I arrive in Australia. I'll probably have a photo copy of my US Driver's license. Any help would be great. Also could anyone provide me with a phone # of an Australian license branch where I could call with this question?

I am studying abroad starting in September and I have to book a domestic flight on JetStar and they have a baggage restriction of 20kg and up to an extra 20kg can be paid for as excess baggage. I am most likely going to be over the 40kg weight limit and I am wondering if any of you have experience with the airline and their leniency with the baggage restrictions. Any other reccommendations are greatly appreciated.

Cheers

My good friend down in Ozzie land told me that it's now winter down there. On our side of the globe it is summer and the heat has been really up there with high humidity. Could you folks enlighten me about your winters? ie. The coldest regions, lowest typical temperatures, average annual snowfall, do you have anything akin to the 'blizzard', do you get to ski, go ice skating, how long does your winter last? Well you get the idea.

I am really curious to learn if your winters are as bad as some of the winters I've seen.

Thanks folks ;-)

I have loadsa aussie mates and we have a bit of banter....Like we trade insults, all meaningless stuff - I call them the "convicts", they call me "Lord John".
Why is it that you can never fully insult an aussie cos they're so light-hearted?

I tried the same banter in France and had to make a James Bond-style escape out of the mens toilets cos there were three fellas with fists clenched chasing me (24) in a feckin' french bar........
