Just as long as you remember Sydney is not Australia, then anywhere is good.
If you want our history then Hobart in Tasmania is beautiful and the same goes for Handorf in South Australia. If you want the laid back life and can cope with the ants and the humidity then Darwin. Wide open spaces and clean air then any place in the heart of Australia. If order attracts you then either Canberra ( but be warned our politicians are there ) or Perth in Western Australia. Sydney is crowded noisy and has everything you could possible desire, but my favourite is Melbourne.
A lot depends on your personal interests

I went all around Australia on my honeymoon, and I gotta say that the best place on earth (IMHO) is Lord Howe Island.
No night life, but if you want to just be surrounded by absolutely idyllic beauty Lord Howe Island is the place. It's even better if you scuba dive or want to try. If you prefer fishing (with mono filament line, that gets tangled all over creation when it breaks) I hear that it's a good place for that too.
Cairns was my least favorite, but that's probably b/c it's just like the NJ shore (I'm from Jersey) except with polite shop staff. Even there the reef and forests just back from the coast were absolutely amazing. Also don't dally too long in Sydney. It's a nice clean city, but you didn't fly all that way to see a city.
Anyways, you can't lose based on everything I saw. It's such an unusual place with generally pleasant people that I'd give anything to go back.

Anywhere and everywhere. That depends entirely on what you want to see and do. If you like skiing, it is pointless going to Cairns. If you want to scuba dive on coral reefs, Melbourne would not be a good idea. Australia is a big place, bigger than the USA and has holidays to fit every desire and pocket.
I suggest you find out a little about Australia first. Read Bill Bryson's book "Down Under" for an American perspective.

It would depend on what sort of holiday interests you.
Do you want beaches, city life, camping, hiking, skiing, 4 wheel-drive adventure holiday, desert holiday, rainforest, sailing in the Whitsundays?
It's up to you to decide what you want to see. Do you want to travel with-in Australia while you're here?
You could go on a bus/coach tour and see the place outside the cities. You could plan an itinerary and drive and meet the real Australians in country towns and stay in pubs.
Like I say it's up to you. Whatever you choose I hope you love it here as much as I do.

Jasmine, Tentofie has hit the nail on the pinnacle. I even have had the exhilaration, on countless events to dive on the whole Barrier Reef, we swam on the beaches on islands in the Whitsundays. Did quite some physique surfing at Sydney and coastal beaches, and can certainly say have in basic terms been stung as quickly as, and at as quickly as taken care of by the lifestyles Guards do not pass finding for complication, stick to the instructions, swim in the flagged areas, and not pass on my own, pass to places the place there are others. you would be asserting an identical if an Australian published an identical question on your State.

This season, it's best to go North.. there in Queensland (the Sunshine State) :)
It's warmer and tropical there. You can visit Cairns, or Brisbane. Skiing is also great in Canberra and Cooma.
Last year we had a blast at Brisbane. I went with my grandma and grandpa. Central Brunswick's location allowed us to tour the great attractions around Brisbane.
