There are some good answers already.
"The Timeless Land" by Eleanor Dark. The start of British settlement in Australia. Most of the characters really existed.
"A Town Like Alice" aka "The Legacy" by Nevil Shute. Based on some real people, but fairly distantly.
"Bliss" by Peter Carey. Australia (or some parts of it) in the 1970s
"The Night The Prowler" by Patrick White. Upper crust Australia at about it's worst.
"They're a Weird Mob" by "Nino Culotta" Major comic novel of the late 1950s. Story of an innocent Italian immigrant.
"My Brother Jack" - can't remember the author. Family saga of the period between two world wars.
"Capricornia" by Xavier Herbert. The northern territory.
"The Fortunes of Richard Mahoney" by Henry Handel Richardson. Classic novel of 19th century Australia after the gold rushes.
"A Descant for Gossips" by Thea Astley. Small town life in Australia.
"Power Without Glory" by Frank Hardy. Corruption and political influence in Melbourne. Thinly disguised story of a real gambler.
Edit -
"Picnic at Hanging Rock" by Joan Lindsay. A great mystery novel that seems like it is based on facts. It isn't, though the rock is real. Made into possibly the best Australian film so far.
Bryce Courtenay? He is just plain dull. I read the first 100 pages of "The Potato Factory" and tossed it. Heaven knows why anybody reads or even prints his stuff.

I find that most Oz are not keen on books. You hardly ever find a library in a home, unfortunately. I think it might be a case of why read the book if you can see the film ( sigh)
However, speaking solely for myself anything that was written by Neville Shute (Norway), Arthur Upfield, Russell Braddon, Thomas Kenneally, A.B. (Banjo) Patterson or any of the poets are well represented in my library.
