The Star Wars movies are strongly and directly influenced by samurai movies. Not just the swordfighting either. The name "Jedi" (from jedaigeki), the kimono-like robes, Obi-wan the old master, R2D2 and C3P0 from Hidden Fortress, and so on.

I wondered if Japanese audiences are aware of these connections and what they think of them. (I thought I'd reach more Japanese by listing this question here, rather than in the movies section.)

My friend and I are 21 years old and are interested in going to Tokyo in may. What's it like? Are americans welcome? Will we have a hard time getting by due to the language barrier? How is the nightlife?

Japan only has 1.4 children born per woman. And in order to sustain the population it needs to be 2.1, and in 2050 the Japanese population is supposed to be 2/3 the size that it is now.

I would plan on flying out of the San Luis Obispo, CA airport. In Japan I would visit Osaka, Tokyo, and Kobe. I would want to spend seven nights in a regular hotel, and three nights in a capsule hotel. Including three meals a day, etc.

To people living in Japan:
This is a silly question, but I am really curious... You must have noticed that the Japanese bento almost always has a red/reddish pickled plum (umeboshi) on top of the (white) rice. Is that supposed to look like the hinomaru? I just saw a cooking program on a Japanese channel and the reporter made a comment that suggested this.
