My guess is Victoria Secret would go over like a lead balloon in Japan because Japanese ideas about cup size etc. aren't quite compatible with Victoria's Secrets sizes. Generally speaking Japanese ladies wear Japanese intimates for some good reasons.

With restaurant chains it's sometimes the case that an established chain will buy the master franchise of a rival for the territory to cut down on the competition. So maybe Mac or Lotteria etc. own the rights to BKs they don't want to open.
There is a Dairy Queen in Sendai, but it's the only one I've found in the whole country.

With chocolate bars they can really vary from country to country. You can't buy a Twix in Canada, and you can't buy a Coffee Crisp bar in the US. It takes a real effort for a company to introduce a brand to a new country. Coca-Cola and Big Macs are just about the world's only universal products.

Yes, it is all about market share and marketing.
I remember a BK back in 1998, but I think they bailed under high competition.
Chocolate seems to need the right packaging strategy. Japanese chocolates are much smaller in size and are individually wrapped, that way you can buy a box, but only eat one or two. Not many huge and heavy people besides the Sumos.
My guess is that the Vicotrias Secret would have to manufacture a wider range of sizes and that probably is not profitable, thus they stay out of the market here.

On the flip side of having the right product and time to market, Cold Stone Creamery seems to be doing well. I have seen wait times as long as 1 hour to get into the Cold Stone at Roppongi Hills Metro Hat. I did wait 30 minutes in the cold rain for Cold Stone.

You can probably get the candy bars in neighboring supermarkets and liquer stores of US army / Navy based in Japan.
I used to buy Mars bars in this tiny liquer store right by the base in Sagamihara. (Maybe Camp Zama?? About an hour away from Shinjuku on Odakyu line if you wanna go. lol)
The liquer store itself was managed by an old Japanese lady so I'm not sure what the deal was but there were lots of other places that sold skittles and stuff too.

As for BK, they used to have it maybe back in 1997 or so in Tokyo. They were popping up everywhere and there was one in the Shibuya Center alley too. But I think Lotteria bought them off because one day I was craving for a whopper and there was a Lotteria where they had BK just a few weeks ago. It sucked a**.
I dunno if it's still like that but there were 2 Lotteria's on Shibuya Center Alley back then almost adjacent to each other.
I remember them getting good business because the whoppers were pretty big and tasty but it was kinda expensive.
A Double Whopper combo costed like 800+ yen I think.

What I wanna know is why Taco Bell doesn't start branching out in Japan. Maybe it's not something the older generation would eat but the younger crowd will definitely go for.
And not to mention Krispy Kreme.

Because they don't come to Japan.
Haha..actually I remember Burger king. It was long tim ago.
To me, the way you think is weired . You think those should be in Japan?

Japanese business person is always trying to seek, find, try and buy nice products from the world.
Probably those products couldn't hold a portion of the share or they did't know how to appeal their products to Japanese sense.
