There are certain distinct features between Chinese and Japanese. In fact, there are distinct features among all the Asian ethnic groups, though telling them apart would often be difficult to the uninitiated. It would be difficult to describe them over the internet. You would have to plow through many many photos to begin understanding their subtle differences.
The easier way would be via dressing and mannerism. Japanese bow to each other a lot even subconsciously. So that is one good trait to tell them apart. The other thing is dressing. Japanese tends to be better dressed

Generally speaking, Japanese people usually have more chiseled, sharper facial features, while Chinese facial features tend to be more rounded. However, this is obviously a generalization and is not 100% true in all cases. Many Chinese people could easily pass for Japanese and vice versa.

They're both from different countries that share some common traditions. It's like asking what's the difference between Canadians and Americans. Chinese and Japanese also speak different languages.

You can tell by their last name sometimes. I can pretty much tell Chinese and Japanese apart just they way the look. I think Japanese and Korean look more alike.

You really cannot tell in most cases, since intermarriages between the two cultures do make it difficult to identify through purely physical attributes.

Asian people usually cannot tell what country another asian is from solely on color or bodily characteristics. They can tell from clothing styles, manners or when the other begins to speak.

I have to disagree with "Japanese people are shorter":
I am female and 5'7".
My dad is 5'10".
One of my cousins (male) is 6'1".
My brother in law is 6'3".
