This is a good question. It does depend on where you live. I'm assuming you're from North America. The closer you are to the Pacific, the less it is. But it isn't a huge difference. It also depends on time of year, but I'm not sure which times of year are more expensive than others. With those variables, it could be as low as $750 or as expensive as $1500.
Because of the time difference, you will lose a day going there, but that can't be helped. The flight is also 14 hours from Chicago to Osaka, for example. I think it's about 9 from San Francisco to Osaka. Keep in mind these are non-stop times. If you're flying from JFK, I'm sure there's a stop in either Fort Worth or San Francisco (maybe even Chicago).
The best way to learn Japanese is by going there. I actually just met someone today who went to Japan without ANY knowledge of the language. Now he is very fluent, and his two years in Japan is better than my three years of high school knowledge. I am shocked, but it proves that if the intimidation doesn't bother you and you have determination to learn the language, which I believe you have, you'll do fine just going there to learn. The Jet program is a great way to do it. He said that it was the best decision he ever made. He is teaching English to Japanese students and learning Japanese himself. It's a great story.
Of course, everyone is different. You may want to go in with some knowledge yourself. If you're in college (or going to college, I don't know your age), take courses if you can. Even a little knowledge will get you far (believe me). And a few weeks there in close contact with somebody who can talk with you and help you learn the language is the best way. I could recommend books for a start, but nothing beats person-on-person learning.
So a college is a great way to get a start, if you can. Because it's not the most popular class for people to take, you'll likely have a small class and get more personalized attention. Of course, if you're teaching kids, or learning from someone in Japan, nothing beats the knowledge they can give you. You could just go out the next day and use it real-life situations.
But whatever you choose, don't let any pretense make you think it is hard to learn. Like everything in life, hard work and perseverance will help you succeed. And I think learning Japanese is so rewarding because Japan is amazing. I hope this has helped you, today, and thanks for posting this question to allow me to share this with someone.

Been there four times. From the Phil, return trips cost 27,000php economy.
My style and advice for you is;
1. Buy a simple grammar book and a dictionary so that you will have an idea.
2. Memorize basic words.
3. Watch lots of anime (with subtitles), while trying to study the meaning of words. (If you enjoy while studying, you wont get bored)
4. Study also the kana, memorize sounds.
5. Buy a Manga, translate each using the dictionary, and check if you are correct by downloading a tanslated Manga from websites like stop tazmo, narutofan etc.
Have fun learning.=)

hello. I was in japan 2 years ago. the cost of plane ticket depends on where you live - the best way to get to know is to visit travel office where they sell plane tickets. what;s more prices change day by day, so get to know it only when you know that in a few months you wanna go to japan.
you want to learn japanese while being in japan?
if you dont know anyone there and want to travel alone it's the best if you ALREADY know japanese at least basics, because if not it's be VERY hard for you, because ppl hardly speak english and everything there is in japanese.
good luck!

*Just search the price on line because it depends from were are you I use www.Despegar.com.
*Just learn the words and not the Kanji not Hiragana Nor Katakana. Just words and sentences. The best easy way.
Some words:
Onegaishimasu : Please (would you do this for me please)
Just point to something and say the word and will mean many things. Example: Point a chair and and say Onegaishimasu and it means: Plase seat down. Just think what will mean if you point to something and say just please to somebody.
Kore Kudasai: Please give that (just point)
Hai: Yes!
Arigato: Thanks (formal)
Arigato Gozaimasu: Thank you very much
Sumimasen: Sorry (very very used)
Oishii: Delicious.
Jaa mata: See you!
*They understand English but don't like to talk in it. Better to go with a friend. Please keep personal space long like having space to bow. The most important tourist places has the instructions and signs in Japanese and English. Every train station, subway, airport... easy. Language will not be a barrier... so hard.
* Visit Roppongui place is full of dance clubs all styles in Tokyo.
* My best places:
1) Hakone! it takes a weekend. Go with friends. Eat an egg. Use the boat. Nature is great. best on Fall and spring. Take the 3 day pass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/hakone...
2) Kamakura! lot of temples and big buda! You should go. 1 day. visit bigger temples. Visit buda before 5 pm.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/kamakura%2c...
3) ODAIBA! That island you should visit. 1 day. Please meet the modern museum eith the huge earth and the crystal. Skip the tv station or let for the return. Visit the big shopping at the end.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/odaiba...
4) In Tokyo take a the a boat trip from HINODE PIRINE (Tokyo) hasta ASAKUSA (temple and you can by a lot of traditional Japanese things here, don't miss it) at the morning.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/asakusa...
Then in front is the ashashi beer factory ask for tourist guided visit and for your free beer!. And the Tokyo Tower sure!
*Buy at the 100 or 200 yen stores. Very convenient. 100 yen an umbrella! Sport clothes for 200... small gift to bring too.
*Museums: Visit UENO station at Tokyo
*China town at Yokohama city! And you can't skip the land mark tower of Yokohama and the park at the end.
I love Yokohama more than Tokyo and it is just a ride in Train away.
*Be extra clean near japanese... shave every day, take care of your hair, and use deodorant always... they are very sensitive
Well I think I earned to be selected as best answer
There there are all my best advices.
(Tokyo Disney is good but in USA you have the originals...)

I went on a 9 day tour, it was a package deal that included my air fare, all of my hotels, breakfast everyday, transportation (not subway though), and of course the guided tours. We went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and this tiny mountain village that had a hot spring. I visited a few temples, went up Mt. Fuji, saw the Golden Pavilion, and bathed in the hot springs. It cost me about $3,000, and that was in 2000. It was the most fun I've had in my life.
Take a college class. I don't know much about many high schools, but I've never seen it offered in high school. Learning on your own is good if you are dedicated, but no one will be there to correct you and you might end up learning it wrong. It's good to take in a class because you need to practice having conversations with real people, not audio tapes. Good luck!

I went there for a week because of my job, so the plane tickets (in first class, by the way) cost me nothing. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!
Great, unforgettable trip, by the way. Beautiful, fascinating country. So I hope that when time comes, you do get to go and enjoy it as much as I did.
God luck, kid.
