Well I lived there for almost 3 months so many things to say.
1. It's crowded and you'll feel like a giant because they are smaller than Americans. They are very curious and shy.
2. Yes! Americans are very welcome and girls fall in love for blond hair and blue/green eyes!
3.They understand English but don't like to talk in it. Better to go with a friend. Please keep personal space long like having space to bow. The most important tourist places has the instructions and signs in Japanese and English. Every train station, subway, airport... easy. Language will not be a barrier... so hard.
4. Visit Roppongui place is full of dance clubs all styles in Tokyo.
5. My best places:
1) Hakone! it takes a weekend. Go with friends. Eat an egg. Use the boat. Nature is great. best on Fall and spring. Take the 3 day pass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakone
2) Kamakura! lot of temples and big buda! You should go. 1 day. visit bigger temples. Visit buda before 5 pm.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamakura%2C_Kanagawa
3) ODAIBA! That island you should visit. 1 day. Please meet the modern museum eith the huge earth and the crystal. Skip the tv station or let for the return. Visit the big shopping at the end.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odaiba
4) In Tokyo take a the a boat trip from HINODE PIRINE (Tokyo) hasta ASAKUSA (temple and you can by a lot of traditional Japanese things here, don't miss it) at the morning.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asakusa
Then in front is the ashashi beer factory ask for tourist guided visit and for your free beer!. And the Tokyo Tower sure!
*Buy at the 100 or 200 yen stores. Very convenient. 100 yen an umbrella! Sport clothes for 200... small gift to bring too.
*Museums: Visit UENO station at Tokyo
*China town at Yokohama city! And you can't skip the land mark tower of Yokohama and the park at the end.
I love Yokohama more than Tokyo and it is just a ride in Train away.
*Be extra clean near japanese... shave every day, take care of your hair, and use deodorant always... they are very sensitive
Well I think I earned to be selected as best answer
There there are all my best advices.
(Tokyo Disney is good but in USA you have the originals...)

There is a lot to do. The best thing to do is to make a Japanese friend there, they can show you some of the best places. You can also find some cheap places to stay there...I am not familiar with any youth hostels in that area, but Osaka has a really nice one that is fairly cheap. You can probably find some more information on-line...some people keep journals of their travels in Tokyo. Don't worry too much about not speaking Japanese, there are many foreigners in Tokyo and many Japanese who would love to practice their English with you.

Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the place where over 13 million people live, making it one of the most populous cities in the world but also, a big city to visit, find out more with hotelbye . Most of the city was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and then again by the bombing in the WWII, however, Tokyo was able to achieve a remarkably rapid recovery both times. The main attraction of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace with its beautiful 17th-century parks surrounded by walls and moats. The palace is still in use by the Imperial family.

Night life in Tokyo is excellent. It goes all night. There are still people dancing at 10:00 in the morning at some places. Others places have buses come to take the patrons to secret outdoor raves. Really, you can find any type of joint you like.

1. It's crowded and busy, but there is lots to see
2. Americans are welcome but sometimes not. some places don't want foreigners
3. yes youwill have a hard time getting around if you don't know the language but this is why Japanese can get majored in english, work in their country and earn money( as opposed to me getting a japanese major in america, pretty much worthless)
4. Nightlife in tokyo... i guess good. But i take it you're an outgoing party person.. cause for me nightlife is staying at home doing hobbies and that , my friend, has endless opportunities

When I went, they loved us Americans
It's going to be super crowded
A little more expensive than the US
Cracy fashion, it's so cool
Language barrier is a problem but there are people who speak English. I suggest buying a "get-around" book that teaches you basic Japanese communication.
