I would definately say Spring or Fall.
June and July is rainy season. August is unbearably hot and humid. It is also when typhoons start to pick up.
December-February can be quite cold and snowy.

It depends on where you are. You'll find that peak holiday season in many countries coincide with school/university holidays. In Japan itself, the peak months for holiday is summer (June-August) because it's the longest school holiday in Japan, so much that plane/train tickets has to be booked at least a month in advance.

March/April - people go for cherry blossomes, really nice.
Sept/Oct - good time to see Maple leaves.
It then all depends on which part of Japan you are going. If you are going to the North, cheery blossom will open till May. Or you can also see the Lavendar field in summer there.

Kamakura is wonderful you will like it. Like somebody already pronounced confirm you journey Enoden. And wintry climate (Nov - Mar) would be a time you are able to bypass off. Kamakura is suitable whilst it is heat.
