I have to write about a single woman's issue in a single country for a paper, and I am going to write about a Japanese issue. I actually am not very knowledgable about women's issues (women's rights) in Japan, so I was wondering if anyone here could give me a list of some important modern women's issues in Japan. Now that I have this assignment, I'm very curious to learn about the issues.

I'll be going to Japan soon to teach English for a year, and it is a tradition/custom to bring some gifts, or "omiage", to show good will. I'm looking for ideas for gifts to give to adults and children alike. Some critiria to help with suggestions:

-Nothing too heavy (weight limit on the plane for luggage and all)
-Nothing too big (again, luggage limitations)
-Nothing gaudy or mundane (shot glasses, magnets, or postcards)
-Something Unisex or able to be given to for any walk of life
-Nothing very fragile, liquid, or perishable.
-Nothing too expensive (no Levis or G-shock watches)

I hope I can get some good ideas from everyone.

Jyaa ne!

Not in a hurry but I am thinking of going to Japan for a vacation. I am planning to fit everything in a two-week itinerary so I have to plan properly to make the most of it. And hopefully, not to screw things up. I am limiting my itinerary to Tokyo, Kyoto and Kanagawa. Hopefully after that, I’d be able to travel again and go to Sapporo and the other islands of Japan.

If I am not mistaken, Kyoto was the former capital so I’d like to visit that too. I heard there are many old buildings and shrines there.

Oh yeah. I love some manga and anime *cough*, so it would be good to buy some goodies. Also, maybe see Orange Range in concert if I’m lucky.

I am planning to stay in a ryokan to really have a unique experience. Any recommendations?

I'll learn more words aside from ‘arigato’ and ‘sumimasen’ if I want to make this as hassle-free as possible. Is there anything else that I shouldn’t miss? Any travel tips for a lady who is traveling alone would be welcome.

Thank you!

I've always wanted to visit Tokyo, and I plan on it soon, but I'm going to be moving to Japan in a few short years, and my choice of jobs depends on where I live. I like Tokyo (well, I'm sure I will once I get there) but Kyoto has that more Japanese feel to it, and it's a modern city. Can anyone tell me from experience which one's better? Thanks.

I have some questions for you:
1. Have you been to Japan? (if yes, how long?)
2. Do you ask questions, answer questions, or both?
3. Why do you come here to Yahoo Answers Japan? What kinds of questions do you feel confident you can answer?

What users do you notice TYPICALLY provide good answers (either to your questions or other questions)?

Who provides the worst answers?

(I suspect some people will answer the first part, but not the second. lol. I suppose that's okay!)
