The Amami rabbit is only known to have occurred on two Japanese islands: Amami Oshima and Tokuno-shima, in the Ryukyu Archipelago south of the island of Kyushu. By 1900 its numbers were considerably reduced by over-hunting. In 1997 it was still reported to occur on both islands.

The japanese word for rabbit is 'usagi', they have them - but they're not native (at least on the main island). You'll find them sometimes in houses as pets... Try & tell a japanese person that some foreigners eat rabbits - they won't believe you!

You know, I live in Okinawa and I can't say that I have seen any. I am pretty sure there are a few here though.
