Best way is to get a job BEFORE you arrive here (note: you'll need a degree).
Easiest way is to join one of the massive 'Eikawa' schools (NOVA, GEOS, ECC, Aeon - who despite others saying differently will employ just about anyone) to get your visa et al, then see how you go from there.
If you don't like working from them, apply for other jobs & bail on the Eikawa. I wouldn't recommend working with an Eikawa for a long time, as they tend to overwork/underpay.
Another option is JET, tho' recently they are being reduced.
Best bet is to have a job already - even a crap one. Then at worst at least you have money coming in...

How much older? You will have a drastically different experience, depending on your race, age, and gender. Caucasian women generally do not couple here, and often adjust with great difficulty to the chauvinistic ageist atmosphere. Caucasian and Black Westerners often confront usually well-founded stereotyped expectations that they are here to wife-up and go. These so-called *StaminaMen* are frequently successful in serial conquest of the local ladies, but usually burn up upon re-entry. If you are from one of the so-called "Second World" societies, you will encounter fairly strong prejudice thinly veiled with extreme politeness. Your options will be to sell counterfeit goods, some manner of drugs, or work construction. You will learn Japanese rapidly because you don't 'look like' a proper caucasian foreigner.
For a developed country, Japan is remarkably stunted in development. Still, the food is excellent, you will get skinny, and your phone will shrink and do a million more things than your clunky handset where you live now. If that's what you want, come on over.

You need to make sure you have a university degree first. It'll be easier to get a job. When I moved to Japan I spoke no Japanese at all. You should study but it isn't essential you know the language before you come.

One test i had to get was a TB test, but that was cheap and easy to get. I hooked up with a company called Interac who help get you a Visa, find housing, and provide a year-long (or more) job teaching English. You must have a Bachelor's degree, buy your own ticket to japan, and provide start up funds. It's easier than JET and Aeon (which are difficult to get into at best), and pays about the same. Good luck.

You don't need any shots because Japan is exactly like the U.S. except they are more polite than us, speak and read a different language, and they are smarter than us.

You need to become as fluent as possible in the language and culture. Japanese are very xenophobic and don't take to outsiders well. This would be a great help at overcoming that and being accepted sooner.
