I've always wanted to visit Tokyo, and I plan on it soon, but I'm going to be moving to Japan in a few short years, and my choice of jobs depends on where I live. I like Tokyo (well, I'm sure I will once I get there) but Kyoto has that more Japanese feel to it, and it's a modern city. Can anyone tell me from experience which one's better? Thanks.

♡I love Kyoto, it's a beautiful, historic place...BUT!
I prefer to live in Tokyo. (I've lived here about 10 years!)
I love the city life and convenience of everything that Tokyo has to offer. In MY opinion Tokyo is much better for MY lifestyle.
My friend and I visit Kyoto a few times a year though and enjoy it for a few days. Cherry blossom season and Fall are absolutely breathtaking in Kyoto! We're ready to come back to Tokyo after a few days...
In my case, *visiting Kyoto is good enough and living in Tokyo suits me just fine.
~I would suggest that you visit both when you get here and decide for yourself. (^_-)-☆ You never know, you just my love♡ the Kyoto lifestyle.
Hope this helps!♡

Kyoto, forgive the pun, is streets ahead of Tokyo. The latter is a good place to visit. There's a lot there and it's all very interesting. But it is a mega city where one feels horribly overwhelmed as a place to live. Take for example, Shinjuku train station, located near inner Tokyo. The population of my country, Australia, walks in and out of that place every day of the week. Tokyo, is the big brassy hostess with the mostest, and maybe some people prefer that. Kyoto is refined, cultural and beautiful. Everything that you would look for in a good wife.

I'd hate to live in Kyoto. Although it is the historical capital of Japan and is the more interesting of the 2 from a cultural point of view, I think it would lose its appeal very quickly.

Yes it is a modern city but its fairly small and compact and not as convenient as Tokyo. The weather isn't great, much colder than Tokyo with more rain (or snow), and I think it has a pollution problem.

Kyoto is great to visit, but Tokyo is a much more interesting and fun place to live. (and also has a lot more of cultural interest than you may realize).

I recommend to move to Tokyo. Tokyo has a lot of fun places. Many people who were born in rural areas have moved to Tokyo. You can meet various kinds of Japanese there.

Kyoto is a small city and you may be tired of it soon. Just visit Kyoto. It only takes 2 and half hours to go to Kyoto from Tokyo by bullet train called "shinkansen". Therefore you can visit Kyoto as many times as you like.

Tokyo I think is more convenient for finding work and for traveling overseas and back home with nearby Narita.

Kyoto has a lot more to offer in terms of sites and tradition and it has easy access to many other great places such as Nara, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima. But as someone mentioned, the weather is worse in Kyoto: colder in winter and hotter and more humid in summer.

All depends on what you prefer...

Tokyo!
Good - greater range of things to do...
Bad - far, far more expensive, your apartment will be MUCH smaller...

Kyoto!
Good - culturally richer... cheaper than Tokyo...
Bad - not as exciting...

Tho', Osaka is only an hour away from Kyoto, and give me Kansai over Kanto any day (Kansai is Osaka/Kyoto region... Kanto is Tokyo)!!!

That's really hard to answer because it's so subjective. The differences are that one is big and one is small. Smaller places are more friendly, but have less to do. Just equate this to the country which you come from

I've given you access to a link for the National Tourism website for Japan, which has lot's of info, plus a website directory for accommodation, just in case you decide to travel from one placeto the other:
