My boyfriend had 2 occasions when he bought 2 used cameras at Ahkihabara (I was with him). We felt that the staffs at 2nd hand electronic shops in Akihabara were not polite at all. There was no greetings when we entered (they could not be bothered) and when my BF wanted to look at and touch the item, they just acted like indifferent robots with NO smiles at all. Even after we paid by credit card, there was NO "THANK YOU / Arigato Goisaimasu" NOR a polite bow to us. The staffs even used 1 hand (not both) to return the credit card. It's downright RUDE!!!

Now why is this so? How can we feedback POOR SERVICE to the management of the shop? It seems like a well-established shop with about 2-3 storeys of items, selling a mixture of new and used items.

Do these staffs treat local Japanese in the same manner? How would a normal Japanese react in our position? Would a local Japanese point out in a straightforward manner to the staff at his impolitness?

I've noticed the word "PACHINKO" in many buildings and went in to take a look. As I don't understand Japanese, I don't know how to get started. Am I right to say that Pachinko refers to the game which one needs to slot small pinballs into the machine?

Can anyone explain to me what the game rules are like and what is considered a win? Also, after winning the pinballs, can I redeem for cash in yen? Are there any websites? Is the place open to foreigners?

I'm on a short visit to Japan. I have a JR pass and want to do the best hiking I can. I don't mind cold weather or snow but I didn't bring any climbing or mountaineering gear so I need pretty mild outdoor activities. Suggestions on places that are easy to get go by Japan Rail and can be seen in a day or two? Thanks.

Being a foreigner, I've noticed that there seems to be a syndicate of Japanese guys (mostly dressed in black) loitering right outside the Shinjuku and Shibuya JR stations. They seem to be roaming around and waiting for some people but look quite suspicious (seem like pickpockets to me at first but of which I thought didn't make any sense later). What do these guys do? Are they male pimps or sex providers? Or are they just out to make friends with attractive ladies?

Also, I walked around Shinjuku late at night (seems like red light district) and saw many well-groomed guys with stylish hair standing in the alley. I was even offered approached and offered a card, to which I rejected politely without even looking and hurriedly walked away since I don't understand Japanese. What do these guys do for a livelihood? By approaching ladies, what do they really want?

I was just looking for general input/ideas on what to do (eat, sightsee, shop, culture etc.) on my upcoming trip to Japan. Keep in mind that it's over the New Year's time period so a lot of normal attractions will likely be closed. We will be in Tokyo from 12/28-1/1, and staying in Osaka from 1/1-1/5 and then back in Tokyo for one night before coming back to the U.S. While in Osaka we plan to take day trips to probably 2 of the 3 of Kyoto, Kobe and Nara as I've read they're all less than a couple hours train ride away.
We're both young and active, like shopping, eating, and some nightlife, though we're no party animals, interested in "normal" sightseeing activities as well as things more unusual, though again I suspect a lot of the normal tourist attractions will be closed. We plan on going to a temple New Years. We don't have tight financial constraints, don't want to nec. eat $200 meals or shop at Chanel, but we've got a fairly liberal budget.
Thanks for the help

to learn about the Japanese culture and how to write/speak Japanese?

I've wanted to go to Tokyo since I was a little girl, but I couldn't afford it. Now I'm saving up for the trip over, but I think it'd be wise if I knew the taboos, and how to behave in that city. Also, it would make things easier if I could read and understand what people are saying to me.

As, I mentioned before, where is the best place to learn all about Japan?

I'm flying from Seoul(ICN) to Chicago(ORD) via Tokyo(NRT).
However, I'm having an 8 hour layover in Narita Airport.

I know the city center or downtown Tokyo is 1hour 30minutes away from the airport and that makes more than 3hours for a roundtrip.
But I hate waiting at the airport for 8 hours!!

Is there any place closer to the airport but worth hanging around?
I just want to walk around and have fabulous lunch!!!
Any suggestions for a layover passenger?

One more question, I'm flying with American Airlines for the first time. (From Tokyo to Chicago)
Are they good compared with UA, Northwest, JAL, Korean Air or Asiana?
(It was the cheapest option of the five other airlines)
