In my opinion, it's one of the best because it has more of traditional Tokyo than other areas. I stayed there my first two weeks in Japan and my parents stayed there as well and loved it.
Asakusa is easily linked to the rest of Tokyo via the Ginza subway line. If you want to go to Nikko, you can take the Tobu line straight from Asakusa.
If you happen to be there around the third saturday of April you can catch Yabusame - mounted Japanese archery in Sumida Park

I prefer to stay in Ikebukuro or Shinjuku as it's more interesting at night. Most entertainments are still open late at night compared to Asakusa, which is more of a traditional Japan full of shrines. If you like a more peaceful area, Asakusa should be right for you. If you like shopping and other forms of entertainment, choose to stay in a place near the more "major" stations so that you can save on travelling time and transport fees and of course enjoy close proximity back to your hotel.

Yes, I have stayed in Asakusa and it was fine. You can always get some food or souvenirs down by the temple or find neat stuff in Kappabashi. It's easy to get from Asakusa to other places in Tokyo, and if you are visiting Tokyo you are going to want to visit Asakusa in any case.

It depends on what exactly you plan on seeing and doing.
Asakusa has many business and small hotels, most of the major hotels are in busier districts. Asakusa is a quiet one. Asakusa is at the end of the Ginza Subway line, that will connect to many places, but again depending on what you plan on doing and seeing it might/might not be the best place.
I suggest what you do is pull out a map of Tokyo and mark down places you'd like to visit and see what the relation of those places are to Asakusa.

Asakusa is definitely a good place to stay! It's near the Asakusa Kannon Temple and has a Subway station there.

Sure!
As far as transportation, you wouldn't have a problem at all.
Asakusa has the "Shitamachi" atmosphere that has been carried over the ages. Unless you can find a cheaper hotel than the one that you are looking at, I don't see any reason why Asakusa wouldn't be a good place to stay.
Have fun!

Go to your local library. Have them point out the travel section. There you should find some books that will give you more detailed information than can be posted here. Lonely Planet is a good start.

Tokyo has extensive train network. So it does not matter where in Tokyo you stay. You can go everywhere by taking trains.
