to learn about the Japanese culture and how to write/speak Japanese?

I've wanted to go to Tokyo since I was a little girl, but I couldn't afford it. Now I'm saving up for the trip over, but I think it'd be wise if I knew the taboos, and how to behave in that city. Also, it would make things easier if I could read and understand what people are saying to me.

As, I mentioned before, where is the best place to learn all about Japan?

The Japanese will make many allowance for your being a foreigner--they assume that you know nothing of their culture until you demonstrate otherwise. Behave in Japan as well as you would at home and that'll cover so many bases for you. Get a copy of the Lonely Planet Guide for Tokyo and for Japan; go to your bookstore and your library and look up the titles they may have on Japanese culture and mores (Charles Tuttle is a publisher that specializes in all things Japanese, both written by Westerners and translated from Japanese). Go to the websites for Sasuga Books (of Massachusets, IIRC) and Kinokuniya Books (of Japan, but with many stores here in the States). Look up your nearest chapter of the Japan Society and your local anime clubs. Get involved--at the very least you'll find other resources of all kinds through them.

Good luck to you in your search!

First off bear in mind a touist visa is only good for 90 days.
Learning to speak Japanese is a major task. And learning to read and write it is much harder. You'd need to remember over 3,000 characters just to be able to read a newspaper!
You can start by going to the library and taking out books on Japan.Travel books can teach you alot. They should also have books / tapes on learning the language.
Watching Japanese TV shows will help you learn how to pronounce words correctly.

Go to Honolulu, Hawaii. Japanese own everything there and are extremely populated in that area.
