I confess, I'm very ignorant as far as Israel is concerned. When I think of Israelites, I think of the nomadic society of the Bible fame. I've also heard bits about the eternal war and whatnot, which definitely doesn't portray Israel as a nation.

I'm only curious because the many people from Israel I know speak good English and seem to be "modern." Anyone knows a reliable website about Israel?

I am looking to go to tel aviv the end of next month but not sure how much it wil cost. I have been before but is was all paid for as i was singing with my band. So if anybody could help me it would be fantastic. The flight would be from newcastle upon tyne to tel aviv israel. I want to go and see my friends who i havnt seen for over 2 yrs now. Thankyou.

I will be going to Israel this summer for 10 days. All I will have to pay for is lunches and I'm wondering how much it will cost, and what advice you could give me. I know the exchange rate is 4.25-1 but that doesn't mean much when you don't know how much anything is going to cost.

I was living in Tel Aviv working as an aupair in July 1987- Dec 87 and again in March 88-Aug 88 and used the "White House" bar to hang out most evenings and weekends. Anyone remember the "White House" from that time ? I met loads of people but it's 20 years since and names escape me!

From Day One, Israel has absorbed billions of dollars of economic aid from America, and who knows how much in military aid. How can they with a straight face call themselves "independent"?

There are plenty of Third World countries that get American aid. Is Israel a Third World country? If not, why are they still on the American tit after about sixty years? When will they become self-supporting? When will they stand on their own feet? Until they do, are they really independent like a real state, not just a garrison?

Israel is often described as "our ally". What justification exists for considering Israel an ally of thr US? What have they ever done for us? How much Israeli blood has been shed in America's interests?

I just heard about Boombamela and that I'll be in Israel at the time. I can't read Hebrew, so I don't even know if I can get tickets . And I don't know if it's worth going. I've been to events like Burning Man and ACL in the states and like the vibe there. But I have never been to Israel before, and this event would be in place of visiting a Moshav and hiking in Galilee. Any recommendations (and are there even tickets)?

Here is an honest question- and please don't lable me an anti semite for asking it- But what is the original basis for the Jewish claim on Israel and surrounding areas? As I understand it, much of that are was occupied by the British, they encourage many of the European Jews at the end of WW2 to move there-
The Brits tried to artificially divide the land into a Jewish state and a Palastinian state. The Jewish state was created- but no cohesive Palastinian state was formed- wheich is one reason for much of the tension. Many Jews assert the land there was given to Jews 'by God'. So does the Jewish claim on that land have more to do with the original British mandate-or God's mandate?
If a Palastinian state were created, wouldnt that bring an end to much of the strife? Of course with many in the middle east threatening to destroy Israel- there will never be peace.
If the Jews argue they have a right to the land over the Palastinians because 'God said so', it's a very shaky claim.
