Or rather, whats your mix of martial arts that work for you best and allow for your own self expression?

For me:

-Wing Chun because I love the centerline theory and deflections.
-Greco Roman wrestling from my High School
-Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do for kicking as their sidekick is really easy for me to use and good for range

When i Do Move #8 and move# 16 on the (Shotokan)Kihan kata,...youre suppossed to scream "KIAH!!!!"
for the purpose of Frazzling your opponent's nerves ( To Scare him up a lil bit) The idea I had was,.....Instead of Yellin "KIAH!!!!" I'll Scream "Fck-You!!!!!!!!!"
(My logic is: that the fck-U is way Way More Damaging to your opponent than a Kiah!)
What do you think?

Is it a benefit, or a hinderance taking time that could be better used for something more practical? Do you see them, and these practices as specific to a religion, (Buddhism) or merely a spiritual practice that can be understood from any religion? (Just as Prayer is used as a tool across many religions)

So, I am 29 and have just ventured into martial arts. I decided to do Taekwondo. I have always wanted to practice martial arts, but as a child my family did not have the money and as an adult, I was for a long time embarrassed by being so old and being a white belt.

I have been training for about 3 weeks now and am very impressed with the results and so are my instructors. I feel that I am ready for the yellow belt test, but have to wait for a certain period of time.

The school that I practice at considers anyone over the age of 12 an "adult" and they practice with real adults. Now, don't get me wrong, some of these kids are really impressive, but I feel that I don't get the attention in my class that I deserve, due to being the only real adult in the class. I pick the stuff up a lot faster than the kids, but don't know how to explain this to the Masters.

Any suggestions???????

and moreover, they seem to think that its a children's thing, and that 4 year olds can do it. wow what sophistocated stuff can you teach to a 4 year old! i opine that no one under age 7 has any business learning martial arts ( which if you remember were invented as hand to hand combat styles for asian military members), not as an extra activitiy on the agenda of the soccer mom!
people keep asking, i'm 17 is it too late? it makes me downright mad to see that! is it too late? no, quite possibly if you had started earlier it woudl have bene too EARLY. that is to say, you might have had less dedication to it. which, afterall is really what matters most.
what has MA come to that its a "children's sport?"

I have studied Aikido and Aikijustsu for a while now. Sure the practice is simple your opponent slowly does the move and you can easily do moves on him. But then I started practicing with my friend and in a real fight people would punch pretty fast like crazy. I find it hard to get an opening since they are moving so wild. So the professionals how do they do it so easily?

What is the difference in Karate and Tae Kwon Do? Also -- he has a little temper -- do you think either will help with that. I've heard that they help with control.

I was hoping someone could help me. A couple years ago I took a Kali class where we practiced full-contact sparring, and we wore those helmets with the metal cage over the face for use with rattan Kali sticks. In my mind I seem to remember that the helmets used in that school had wood or metal on the crown (top) of the head, but a helmet I just recently bought only has foam padding. So here are my questions:

1. Do Kali sparring helmets normally have wood/metal on the crown of the head?

2. And, does anyone know where I can buy one?
(any websites that sell kali helmets would be helpful, and please do not tell me to just search in Google)

Thank You Very Much

Just wanted to know fellow martial artists opinions on Aikido.
Having trained in Boxing,shukokai/shotokan karate, lau gar kung fu.
I investigated Aikido and jiu-jitsu in 1989 and was very impressed with the demo of Aikido I attended at the time but chose jiu-jitsu as at the time I felt it more practical for the street but recall when I fought freestyle in karate I tended to favour evasion and counter attacks hence my curiosity in aikido back then.
I still have the urge to begin studying Aikido but wonder if my age would work against me re: reflex evasion as I’ve not done any martial arts training in over 3yrs I’m 44yrs old and admittedly unfit at present although I’m quite keen.

Your thoughts please

By "feat" I mean realistic moves or maneuvers. For example, there are schools of martial arts all over Asia, where guys practice getting hit with thick wooden staffs. I also like brick-breaking. What else is there?

Please don’t respond with stuff from movies like walking on water and jumping over houses.

Muay Thai vs. other disciplines, who wins and why? I have seen quite a few Muay Thai fighters fighting other disciplines and it was no contest. The Thai fighters walked right through their opponents with devastating leg kicks while easily absorbing the assault of their opponents (A flying leg kick just isn't the same as a baseball bat (shin) to the ribs). Fortunately for their opponents clinching and elbows were not allowed. As for training, is there anyone who trains/strenghtens the body and mind like Muay Thai fighters?

meaning; what aspect of your training did you find the most difficult to grasp. This could be anything from the esoterics of sparring mentality, to one basic move being more or less easy to do, to grasping the need to learn the history of your particular M.A., etc.

I wanted to start taking Martial Arts. I don't know much about the different types but from what I do know Kempo has interested me the most. If your involved with Martial Arts which is your favorite and which would you recommend for me? Btw, I live in west suburbs of Chicago if that helps as far as knowing what types of places would be in my area.
