judo is throws and grappling no chops and kicks

edit: no strikes in judo and judo is "sport stuff" because it was derived from jujutsu to be made as a sport. now japanese jujutsu did have strikes and grappling

Its actually just something funny, in the sixties judo was more popular then many other styles. A lot of the time if someone were taking a martial art, the non-practitioners would say "he takes judo". Also in old style judo, not the stuff taught for sport, Judo did have strikes and low kicks, this is part of judo's, jujitsu heritage.

Ray H is right. Long before people started saying "I know Karate" or "I know Kung Fu" to try to keep people from messing with them, people used to say "I know Judo" back in the sixties. And since most people weren't familiar with the different martial arts back then, they tended to mix up karate techniques with Judo techniques, especially the writers of James Bond films with Sean Connery in it. It was only after Bruce Lee made Kung Fu and Karate popular in the seventies that Judo got relegated to the background as an old "has been" art : P Today, "I know MMA or BJJ" seems to be the latest catchphrase.
