He can definitely submit Hughes off his back. Hughes has had trouble with Newton, Charuto, and BJ. All three of them have either nearly put Hughes out or have finished the choke. Hughes better give Serra some respeck or he's gonna find himself praying just like he did with BJ. Hughes also has barely any stand up. His kicks are the quite possibly the ugliest in MMA.

I like Serra a lot and I definitely think he has a pretty good chance simply because Hughes' standup is horrendous. If he caught GSP he certainly has a chance to catch Hughes.
Unfortunately, as much as I want Serra to win, I have a bad feeling Hughes vs. Serra will look a lot like Sherk vs. Franca, a 25 minute blanketing. Serra's BJJ is awesome but as far as I can remember Hughes has been able to neutralize all the best groundfighters, except for BJ Penn of course. I don't think Serra is as much of a BJJ wizard as Penn is.
My heart says Serra by standing KO, my brain says Hughes by 25 minute lay 'n pray victory :-(
Edit 1:
Dustin B, Hughes' sub defense is light years ahead of what it was when he fought Newton, at that time he was much more of a pure wrestler.

I think Matt Serra is an underrated fighter, even after his fight with GSP. Some see his win as a "fluke" but I think Serra is quite good. His BJJ is excellent, and I think if he uses his brain he will likely beat Hughes.
What he has to avoid is letting up on Hughes. If he lets him breathe for even an instant, Hughes has incredible strength and can power bomb him to the mat. As we have seen recently with the fights between Randy Couture and Gabe Gonzaga, and GSP and Josh Koscheck, if you are well trained and smart, you can press the action to the point of overwelming even the strongest fighter.
My take is that Serra should go after Hughes full bore, devastate him with his standup game (Hughes will expect a ground war) and if he can wear him down enough, go for a finishing move. It must be nonstop action and Serra should train to the limit to ensure he has the cardio to devastate Hughes....although I am sure that is a mute point.

Matt Serra has an amazing abilty and team to train for a fight and adapt his gameplan to beat that fighter. This will be his toughest fight. Being the champion he has alot more distractions and obligation. But I have seen him train and and his ability on the ground is sick, his hands are constantly improving. He can make hughes pay for coming in. Hughes is going to need to box his way in and therefore open to get hit. He can sit and ground and pound Serra because Matt S will snatch a limb or thrown on a triangle. Matt S by sub from the mount.
another note is Hughes has left Miletich in Iowa and has been training in St Loius I think. This could effect him.

he has a better shot with hughes than he did with st pierre. I really like matt serra but i have to give this one to hughes. matt is better standing up but hughes wrestling ability and positional dominance i think will outweigh serra's jiu jitsu. Hughes also is pretty good at submissions. Serra jiu jitsu is sick though. slight edge to hughes.

Of course he can beat Hughes. Hughes has never KO'ed someone standing, Serra just did it to GSP. This fight should be competitive.
