apologies if this has been asked b4. I think england played very well esp. under the circemstances ie WITHOUT beckham, owen and Rooney! and esp. considering they have a crap manager.

ok england lost fair and sqaure and they ARE crap at penalities, but who thinks england played better in the real part of the game, albeit without scoring.

Portugal - France
Didn't like the ref, he clearly was taking the side of France.
France did most the diving not Portugal.

Italy - Australia: penalty last minute. Neill goes to ground in the penalty area, doesn't touch the ball. Grosso makes no attempt to jump over him and falls over. Decision - penalty. If I had been a referee I would not have given the penalty as it was pretty 50:50 -Neill made a mistake with his lunge but Grosso could have avoided him. Australians are up in arms over this yet if the roles had been reversed (ie Australia attacking) and the penalty had NOT been given, I'm pretty sure there would have been uproar in equal measure. My question is this: is there a genuine psychological block in our brains which makes us see whatever we want to when watching our teams or are we just pretending not to see but really know the truth?

I find it so ridiculous that after every single match the fans blame the referee for everything.. Why is that so hard to accept that their team lost, it's a game, someone has to lose! I personally don't think referee's were unfair or biased towards any of the teams.. Look at this this way, whoever gets the penalty the fans will think it's unfair. So what i there left for referees to do? Never to give penalties to anybody?
Moreover for most of the time you can see it from the angle which doesn't show what has really happened so it may seem unfair! But the referee is there so he can see better and he knows what he is doing.. I know for a fact that this has happened to me when Ukrainian player got a red card and Spain got a penalty shot, from so many angles it seemed like this was such an unfair decision and everybody agreed, even though they were not ukrainians at all...And only after the game they showed it from another angle and you could clearly see that the referee was right!

Many people have used words like "unsavoury", "diving", "cheating" when talking about the Italians here. I just want to know what is this based on seeing as in this particular world cup (apart from the De Rossi red card) I haven't seen them behaving particularly badly and, in fact, would say that one of the reasons they have got so far is the positive and concrete way they have reacted to the more physical tactics thrown at them and the fact that they seem to have eliminated most of their characteristic play acting. Am I wrong or have they got better?
