Italy - Australia: penalty last minute. Neill goes to ground in the penalty area, doesn't touch the ball. Grosso makes no attempt to jump over him and falls over. Decision - penalty. If I had been a referee I would not have given the penalty as it was pretty 50:50 -Neill made a mistake with his lunge but Grosso could have avoided him. Australians are up in arms over this yet if the roles had been reversed (ie Australia attacking) and the penalty had NOT been given, I'm pretty sure there would have been uproar in equal measure. My question is this: is there a genuine psychological block in our brains which makes us see whatever we want to when watching our teams or are we just pretending not to see but really know the truth?

I am not an Australian, but I fumed and fumed over that "dive" penalty.

But I don't know if I'd have been QUITE so angry if it had been the other way around. I suppose that makes me biased - even when neither team is mine.

Hi Matthew

When you watch two teams you don't really support, then you concentrate on the foot ball! You enjoy the game to the full because the result doesn't really affect you! It's all about a foot ball game. You find qualities and falws in each team, player etc. You remain objective throughout because it doesn't mean much to you!

When watching a team you've always supported, your mind is not concentrating on the game, but on your team! So of course you're biased! You want your team to win no matter what (Some people do) How often do you hear people say "We need a penalty now" Because they can feel their team is not as good as they would like it to be so they hope and pray for an incident leading to a penalty (Or deny the other team a penalty for that matter). So you watch the penalty taken that will ensure your team's victory (Or the other team denied the penalty you know they should have got but you don't mind it! In fact you feel really pleased because it's gone beyond the foot ball game, it's a personal matter to you! And you know many die hard fans (Any team) may feel pretty disatisfied with their conditions, home, jobs etc. So foot ball is an escape, especially their own team! They project their own ambitions to succeed onto their team and if this means cheating and getting away with it ... Doesn't matter to them! They've got something to celebrate.

Without doubt as human beings we all possess our own particular bias in everything we experience and this obviously extends to football. With the advent of comprehensive television coverage a great number of critical decisions can be resolved in most cases. Possibly not the Rooney stamp.

However, I wonder if we actually want to get rid of the bias. I feel as long as these bias do not overflow into violence or physical aggression. Then differing views should be embraced. Within society diversity is of benefit to all and often embraced and so should it be for football.

I believe half the fun of football and why it is such a great game is the fact that there are these differences and rivalries.

May be fans cannot be objective but is that such a bad thing?

MA... In some techniques you're actual. Any pupil of physics immediately can crack a e book and earnings via ability of analyzing some lines what Albert Einstein and Pythagoras sweated blood to confirm. Any electrician does understand as lots approximately electricity as Thomas Edison (i'm going to end wanting asserting Nikola Tesla, the guy became a Wizard, base line) Does this make Joe the electrician an more suitable guy than Tesla? hardly. Does it make xxEmoZipxx from BandP Wristslashers an more suitable guitarist that Jimi Hendrix? Hell no, i don't care how lots technically better they might play. Mozart, Nikola Tesla, Einsten, Hendrix, they have been Gods. i don't supply a raggedy ratstich how lots better somebody immediately can reproduction, they did it first and that's the place the rubber accomplished met the line to me. Copying isn't comparable to inventing to me. and that i take merely slightly exception to immediately's athletes or in spite of might desire to ruin those of the previous. supply Babe Ruth a bat a placed him up against a type of juiced up MLB Prima Donnas. he will carry close. Take a number of the golly whiz fencers we've been given immediately supply em a sword and placed em up against Achilles, see who's left bleeding interior the airborne dirt and dust. Heroes are heroes for a reason, they are larger than existence and that transcends any age or era. MA2; If i'm an fool for admiring greatness and heroes, and questioning we choose greater balls and much less plastic in this limp excuse for an age then i'm an fool proudly. i might particularly be a dinosaur on my feet than a sheep on my knees. (And NO i'm not asserting every physique right that's a sheep) BA: fairly yeah, as I suggested some human beings's stature crosses all generations yet for many musicians and entertainers yeah generationalsm has lots to do with it I[m specific.

No, we can be objective as fans, and I can tell you that it wouldn't have been reversed becuase an australian wouldn't have dove. Italians are pansies and tend to like to dive and get calls, although I don't see how any of them could be happy to win like that. I was objective in the England game though, and I think that that was a fair game, although the red card on Rooney was a little harsh compared to the standard of this tournament. BUT, he shouldn't have lost his temper.

Sometimes. On close calls certainly.
After about 5 seconds I can usually settle the truth in my mind.

The problem resides within the 18 yard box. The ref is ALWAYS wrong then!
