My husband and I do not attend Church every Sunday, but we do believe in god. As a child, all of my siblings and I were baptised, should I baptise my son even though we don't go to church on a regular basis?

Can anyone give me a concrete example of a situation where having faith in the unknown is better than knowing facts with ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY?

(PLEASE NOTE, I said BETTER, not PREFERABLE. People often prefer to not know what is best for them.)

I submit that people fall into one of two camps. They either want to KNOW, or they want to BELIEVE, and that is what divides the theists from non-theists.

I further submit that the majority of ignorance is vincible ignorance, and people who don't "know" are like this because they don't "want to know", because ultimately they are afraid to know. "Faith" like "hope" is simply another way of staying blind to the reality of life.

I await your examples.

Evolution is still a Theory (and seems to be somewhat of a religion for some people) - and Yes, Gravity was a Theory until it was Proven (unlike the WHOLE Evolutionary theory). Where is the indisputable, absolute evidence that the Theory of Evolution is 100% factual? And please, please do not confuse the details of the Evolution Theory with the Survival of the Fittest Theory. TY

Now that the current incumbent of the vatican, The German Shepherd, has decided to abolish limbo, we the Intelligent Minority (as opposed to the moral majority) have developed a method of "de-baptism". It is designed to free all catholics or indeed any other forced inductees into any religion (unfortunately we cannot repair severed foreskins - yet).

You will be free to eat meat on a Friday and use the contraceptive method of your choice. You even get to re-possess your soul (which some believe is a valuable cash asset - you could raise a loan against it, or even sell it).

The procedure is free and we promise that it is completely painless - we won't even throw any water at you.

To enrol, simply post an answer to this question. Alternatively, you may rate it with a thumbs up/thumbs down or report it as abuse. Any of these will guarantee you freedom from the alleged god your parents foisted on you out of fear and ignorance.

Come one, come all - see the true light.

The fact that you read so far, and will keep reading until I, the writer, break that bond, become boring to you.
I truly believe that that is what those writers were counting on. There wasn't much material to read back 'in the day'.. and every drop was 'gold'.
Don't you think?

This puzzle is the philosophical basis of the elusive but dazzling insight of enlightenment – when the indefinable essence, the common spirit of all things, the bright light of simply being, the brilliance of existence, shines through the fog and confusion of material conditions. When we stop seeing the different things and sense instead an essence present, a wonderful oneness, uniting everything. Relatively modern western philosophy has naturally not yet shaken its fundamental dependence on materialism. It hasn’t gone quite so far.

Look Before You Leap
The existence or otherwise of God is clearly a deeply-charged emotional issue for everyone. It goes to the heart of our philosophy of life. Yet it’s significance is so profoundly intrinsic to our life, we are naturally reluctant to even recognise this emotional element. We typically defend our views with unreasonable rationalisations. Inevitably our feelings affect our perception of any evidence for or against the existence of God or the spiritual world. This is only right and essential.

I have no issue with life partners of either gender... but the whole issue of redefining marriage - that has been a heterosexual institution forever and a day. Why not create something more unique / special for gay and lesbian life-partners instead of something "old" and so "done that"? Maybe there wouldn't be so much animosity going back and forth then and the extremely religious would be more accepting?

Getting away from the Islam issue and widening it becasue all religions seek to define 'truth' and reality aren't they all basically disagreeing and isnt that the basis for disagreement and intolerance?
If you cant agree on whether God, Allah, Buddha created this posting then can you really agree on anything??

to gays no matter a how well intentioned you may be?

I appreciate and respect all the Christians that accept us as regular people worthy of the same freedoms and privileges as everyone else. At the same time, this cliché says something other than what many intend.

Being gay is the essence of me. “Hating the sin and not the sinner” still translates to the reality that I'm hated since being gay is who I am. I am much more than just my sexuality, but to call my essence sin, and to say you hate that sin, is also to say you hate me.

The phrase is like saying, “I like you. I just hate who you are.”

I'm trying to provide a little insight, and also to learn how you would feel if you heard this said to you all the time?

PS – the question is NOT about whether you “approve” of me, because quite frankly, the question is not directed to prejudice people.

I've noticed that in a lot of questions related to faith, a lot of people either blatantly insult the person asking the question or take the opportunity to shamelessly plug their beliefs. What ever happened to respect for your fellow man? Must we continue to insult people and lie or can we concentrate on questions with no ulterior motives?
