I've noticed that in a lot of questions related to faith, a lot of people either blatantly insult the person asking the question or take the opportunity to shamelessly plug their beliefs. What ever happened to respect for your fellow man? Must we continue to insult people and lie or can we concentrate on questions with no ulterior motives?

The discussion and questioning of religion is by no means a bad thing. What I am suggesting is that it be done without overtly insulting people. Sorry for any confusion

Yes there should be more respect here. I think that people without faith should realise that others have a right to faith if they desire it or if it has been proven to them personally.

Many deeply religious people believe that their way is the only way. While I agree that there may be only one way, it probably isn't the best idea to make that your opening statement in a discussion. The "I'm going to Heaven and you're going to Hell" opening line is a difficult way to start a dialogue with someone you are trying to pursuade or discuss ideas with. Chances are pretty good they feel the same way about you.

Good listening skills are generally always respectful. I suggest starting out in listening to others and recognizing the beneficial commonalities that exist among your faith and any others you are discussing. Once commonalities are discussed and respected, divergent views can be introduced and persuasion [or at least respectful disagreement] can happen.

this is bothersome. You will get answers like freedom of speech is a good thing but I wonder is it a good idea to do something just because you can. A sociopath knows right from wrong but just does not care. I think those who are rude here in this dark closet are just that sociopaths, and cowards for saying something here in the dark they would not say in the light.

It is so bad that even when one asks a legitimate question some get defensive thinking their faith is being attacked.

Muslims get attacked and though I am not a Muslim it bothers me that people are so scared of them that they attack with baseless slurs.

People are scared and some are cruel which leads me to say that when the Bible describes man in the flesh it is right on.

I guess part of the reason why people attack the faithful here is because they feel like they're being attacked by them in the real world. It's a means of venting and taking out ones frustrations. It's not right, but that's the best explanation can come up with.

No, I am not tired of people insulting other faiths. The beliefs that most people hold sacred are complete lunacy, and having a rational argument always leads to ridiculous debate that is worthless and never comes to a satisfactory conclusion.

Religions, and faith in general, should be insulted. It is going to get us all killed. If anyone is attacking people's character rather than their arguments or beliefs; I am against that. It is known as an "Ad Hominem Abusive" fallacy.

Insults aren't acceptable but challenging other people's beliefs from a moral and intellectual viewpoint is necessary. Never unquestioningly accept the validity of any doctrine.

Yes, I believe that people should find more constructive ways to eliminate the dangerous mind rot of religion!

Insult or not though, the Christian and Islamic fundies have divided the world between them. It's us atheists who are going to get caught in the cross-fire!

When people can ask questions and answer questions without the other person knowing where they are, who they are, what they are....there's something on the inside that releases all the pent-up thoughts and feelings that one can never say face-to-face. I think you are seeing the true character of man (universal term) come out in this format. Scary isn't it?

Insults, offenses, etc. , it all goes with the territory.
Religion and Politics can both be very inflamatory subjects.
And actually it makes for stimulating questions and answers.
