Basically, if all of us are born into a particular religion and then we go on to defend that religion as being the only true one, would we convert to the religion we are defending now if we had happened to be born into another religion? Isn't it just a conincidence that we happened to be born to parents of a particular religion?

1) saying that it has to be taken in context

2) saying that it has to taken in the context of the time it was written

3) saying "oh, but that's the old testament that doesn't count anymore ......... except of course when it can back up our arguments"

4) being able to randomly choose which bits are to be teken literally and which bits are to be taken as a metephor.... as the need arises.

It's a brilliant system really, in this way you simply can't lose an argument. Well done. I am impressed.

I keep seeing Christians saying the Old Testament is not used any longer, especially when challenged with questions on scripture.

Why is it still around, then?
What purpose does it serve if it is no longer used?
It seems to me that if they were all destroyed, there would be much less confusion.
Any ideas?

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple."
Luke 14:26

"And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death."
Matthew 10:21

I wonder who will be firt to defend such horrible instructions by going on about "context". It's a handy one that to defend biblical violence as is randomly deciding which bits are to be taken literally and those which are metaphors.

To keep us away from the look (mostly lusty look) on girls or women who dressed up in such a manner.

In some families fathers either tolerates or just keeps quiet of their daughter's dressing styles, tight tops which obviously exposes the breasts and abdomen short and tight bottoms which really shows the thighs etc., which really any one at one sight can have a lust full look..

is it possible to keep us away from the visual adultery as Jesus Says in the Bible if any one looks at a girl with a lustfull look he already committed adultery....?

Some people say that probability of life beggining on earth by coincidence is one in a million and so it is not possible.
But the number of stars and planets in the universe is infinite (or maybe billions X billions). So the probability is very very high or even infinite.
