1) saying that it has to be taken in context

2) saying that it has to taken in the context of the time it was written

3) saying "oh, but that's the old testament that doesn't count anymore ......... except of course when it can back up our arguments"

4) being able to randomly choose which bits are to be teken literally and which bits are to be taken as a metephor.... as the need arises.

It's a brilliant system really, in this way you simply can't lose an argument. Well done. I am impressed.

I understand what it is that you are saying, but I think the important question for you to ask yourself is,

Why do you think you need to challenge the beliefs of these people?

You are sounding more Christian in this respect than they are.

What are you so afraid of, that makes you think you need to prove something about them.

You obviously have some idea about their belief system that frightens you or you would see them as just being silly.

Of course you won't, or can't admit this because frightened people always pretend to themselves that they are just right about, not afraid of what they feel the need to attack.

Think about this, ignore them and see to your own life. Your own actions are what you have some possibility of affecting

God bless you for trying to hurt others by ur words. Unfortunately, nice try! The bible stands as it is. The Bible's literature is a great source of negativity and positivity. We as Christians don't pick and choose. We are to love God and his teachings by the power of the Holy Spirit no matter what. Why try to hurt those who want to believe? Why waste ur time? Move on in ur life and be a moral person seeking ur truths and not bashing others because you are only hurting ur self therefore "you will reap what you sow"..

The prime prerequisite for all religion is to turn off your brain and thereby cease all rational thought processes. Then you are magically transported to lala land where you are freed from the shackles of reality and hence happy to defend the egregious absurdity that abounds in sacred text. Of course, this transformation to be turned into the self-inflicted brain-dead is much easier to achieve if you are gullible, ignorant and stupid in the first place.

I take the violent and nasty bits as they are.... I don't defend them ... and I remember my DAD does incredible megadeath stuff ...

A lot of the time you are hearing regurgitated sermons and the words of some other guy down the line ... not knocking the family but really ... more study ... more study ...

Oh and I am impressed with how you worded your query too.

I don't have a good answer for you.The times of the bible were quite different than now. They were quite different at the time of Christ than they were at the time of Moses.
The whole of the Bible is literal and the whole of it is a metaphor.
Many do take the Bible out of context.
Read the book, read it to find mistakes, read it to back up your disproof of it,but read it.

i'd rather read the whole bible as a literary/historical piece that is not above criticism. I still call myself christian, but I read it in a wholly literary context, not a literal one.

Yup, there sure are some contradictions and horrible things in the bible.

haha.. sounds to me like you've been defeated. Try downloading www.e-sword.net You can get the entire bible, in several translations, including commentaries from well known, and well celebrated theologins. Then make up your mind. You can't expect ppl to walk in with little to no knowledge of something, and expect those with the knowledge to just accept it.

All I know is that we all will be judged on the same day so, take the Bible anyway you want it.
