Well, there are a few other question about afterlife on here, but I'd like to ask one of my own. For information, I myself am agnostic. However, I have one friend who calls himself a "militant atheist" and another who is a Christian. We were discussing an afterlife, and the atheist pointed out that people want to believe in an afterlife because it is comforting to them; it is frightening to believe that nothing happens after you die. It's better to believe that you will have this wonderful eternal existence with all of your loved ones after life. My Christian friend basically agreed with this, and said that it was comforting for her to believe that after she dies, she'll be with her family again, etc.
My main question is: what is so scary about just dying? Personally, I'd be more frightened to believe in an afterlife because there's the chance of not going to heaven. But in any case, I don't understand why people want so badly to believe their is "life after death"?
