In Canada we have two official languages, and in reality it's not a huge issue. It's not unheard of for an English-speaker to move to Quebec and learn French.

In Canada most people respect bi-, and multilingualism.

There are many other countries where the population is relatively happy, educated, and healthy which would never even imagine of using only one language. Places like Switzerland and Sweden come to mind.

Americans seem to be shooting themselves in the foot by being so ignorant of languages other than English.

Not only that, but English of course is from England. If America is supposed to be such an independant country, they could at least have their own language, perhaps one of the aboriginal languages.

Really, the U.S. looks like one big English colony to me. Canada may still use the U.K. monarchy as powerless figureheads, but at least there is diversity and utter recognition of bilingualism, not to mention multi-lingualism. The U.S. are changed Brits.

I am planning on going to medical school and I am undecided of the following choices.
1= Biology Major, Spanish Major
2= Biology Major, Spanish minor, French minor.

I am fluent in French and it would be nice to get some grammer classes for that. Otherwise for Spanish I have been taking for 5 years and will spend 6 weeks with a family in Paraguay to improve my spanish. A French minor would make more proficient or professional in French. What looks better for med school and future emplyment? A double major or 1 major and 2 minors?

We all know American English and English English are very different. One says truck, the other says lorrie. One writes p-r-o-g-r-a-m, the other adds a few letters to make p-r-o-g-r-a-m-m-e.
And of course, they both have words with no cross-Atlantic equivalent.
Well, it's high-time we shared. Americans, which handy Britishism would you like to adopt? Brits, which Amercianism would you like to import?

My personal choice would be "moggie". In America, we have no one word for a non-pedrigreed cat. This may not bother you, but I'm an obsessive cat-lover, and calling the kitties "mutts" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

And while I was over in the U.K. fetching "moggie", I'd stop and take home "Pull the other one, it has bells on". I mean, really, it's such a delighfully weird phrase. Miles better than "Yeah, right".
