I'm a colombian filmmaker worried about the people who are going to watch my films. I found that most americans never watch films in foreign languages.

The movie industry here in America is clique oriented and basically ran like an oligarchy. The movies coming out now days are just plain garbage this is why they have to make remakes and remakes amd more remakes because there are no more original ideas out there and the public is getting sick and tired so they have opted for small budget independent feature films and all people that follow the industry know that the market has increased four fold for independent films in last two decades. I think as the studios further decline there will be a market for foreign films and as the ethnic demographics of the USA change so will the taste of the film that they prefer to watch.

I know lots of Americans who watch foreign films, plus Hollywood produces more films than most countries so we don't have to rely on foreign films as much. And as far as Americans being lazy like some people are saying, are you serious? When I was in Germany all the American movies were dubbed into german, so how is that any less lazy?

Because they don't like reading the subtitles. They like movies with happy endings - which many foreign films don't and to which I say "YAY"! Often times the symbolism is lost on the vast majority of the theatre going public or there is too much to think about. Also the timing and editing are often different - not so many cuts or quick edits - so they are sometimes perceived as slow or dull. I find it only an issue with Swedish films - which are ponderous.

Case in point - I went to see "Pan's Labyrith" and people walked out as soon as the subtitles flashed on the screen.

But then it did do well here as did "Heroe" "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and "House of Flying Daggers" but there was martial arts in those last 3 so that might not be as helpful.

Please don't dumb down your films for us though. There are Americans who do appreicate foreign films, and we like to see the creativity of people around the world.

America has plenty of movies to go around, there have been some really good foreign language ones though (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Amelie, for example). Americans just want really high quality movies.

That doesn't mean foreigners should watch American movies or that Americans should watch foreign movies. Nobody HAS to watch anything.

I'd say it's two main reasons:

Most Americans can't stand reading subtitltes; they claim its difficult to read and keep up with what the characters are physically doing (a ridiculous claim, in my opinion)

Most foreign films are too realistic for Americans too handle, and the realism is either "uncool" (such as the main character living with his/her parents, for example) or disturbing (watch "Visitor Q" from Japan and "Irreversible" from France - people were known to walk out when those two movies were released here)

I don't speak any foreign languages and I don't enjoy any movie where I have to read the subtitles. If I wanted to read, I'd stay home with a good book.

College-educated Americans usually do....at least I know I do. I like American films, but foreign films are good, too. I usually like the indie American films, but sadly they aren't distributed like the crappy films for large audiences.

I love foreign films. I just got done watching "L'Amour Dangereux" One of my favorites is "Plata Quemada." Another is "El Cielo Dividido."

This is why I like Netflix so much, they have a lot of foreign films.
