I understand that speaking and writing Japanese are two different things. Can you learn using the roman alphabet (Hepbern system)? I've looked at some books and a lot of them romanize Japanese. Is this a common way to learn to communicate in Japanese? I won't be writing any letters soon. Just want to understand and speak.

I know they both mean "your" but because the words "thy" and "thine" are different and were in use at the same time, there must be some subtle difference in meaning.

It seems that it is a Greek word, where "eu-" means "good". So, it would seem that "eureka" means "good reka", whatever that means. If "eureka" really does mean, "I found it", what language does it come from?

I am recently relocated from the east to the west. I'm just beginning to be aware of the great contribution Mexican workers give to the agricultural community around here, and several hot issues that crop up because of that (no pun intended).

I'm learning Spanish so I can communicate better with my patients at work. Some people I work with refuse to learn Spanish, and make little effort to use an interpreter, stating that if someone moves to America and lives here, that they should learn the language.

A Spanish gal argued back that if you were to visit France, you wouldn't be expected to learn French. Another person sad "that's fine for a vacation, but if I were to go live there, I would learn the language." What do you think? The Spanish have a beautiful language and culture, and I don't care for the racal tensions I feel at work. Is this tension common in a lot of California? And my main question: "Is it fair that Mexicans should be required/expected to learn English if they choose to live here?" Just curious, please don't think I'm prejudiced.

I'm supposed to be writing a paper using it and I don't understand it. As long as my sentence begins with "I believe that," any verb that follows should be in the subjunctive even if I say something like "I believe people like TV because..."? Or is it only to be used in the sense of "I believe you should get a dye job because you make an awful blonde"? When there's an implication of "should"?
