@silverbirch: "Fed, as in, "I have fed the horses". I habe die Pferden gefressen."
No, your phrase means "I ate the horses." And it would be pejorative as "fressen" is what how animals eat. "Essen" is the right verb for humans.

"gefressen" is the participe of "fressen", so it really means "eaten" or "ate".

Examples:
"Die Katze hat die Maus gefressen." would mean: "The cat ate the mouse."
"Die Maus wurde gefressen." would mean: "The mouse was eaten."
"Hat er heute schon gefressen?" would mean: "Has he eaten yet today?" (Referring to an animal. To a human this is insulting.)

It's the past tense of the verb fressen and it means "eaten" as done by an animal.

Essen is what people do.
Fressen is what animals do.

Unless people are eating like animals and you mean to insult them. Then if you use fressen, it's like saying you guys are eating like a bunch of pigs.

"eaten", my child, may have a different meaning in a few special contexts though, but basically it's "eaten".

[oh silverbirch, "I have fed the horses" would be "Ich habe die Pferde gefüttert" - "Ich habe die Pferde gefressen" would indeed mean that you have eaten the - mind you, there are people that like to eat horse meat, I myself am vegetarian.]
