"In New York, the roads that run north and south are called avenues, and THE ONES that run east and west are called streets."

Do you think "the ones" in this sentence is appropriate?

"Look at her: flushed and shiny with sweat, hunched under her brown ole hair, in her brown ole kitchen. Deep inside, her organs pump double-time, trying to turn bile into strawberry milk. Outside, her brown ole life festers uselessly around the jokey red bow on her dress."
Does that "ole hair" mean that her hair becomes white? and could you tell me the meaning of the last sentence: "Outside, her brown ole life festers uselessly around the jokey red bow on her dress."

Are there really any hard core rules that matter when it comes to grammar? Where could one go on here to learn good grammar skills? Is it really that important how you say what you say or that you say it at all? Does anyone else have any problems with grammar? Is there anyone that has had problems with their grammar that has found a good way to keep it straight?
