I've recently moved to France but my language skills are progressing at a depressingly slow speed. At home I've tried lessons, books, CDs, TV and I am still taking classes here but the vocab never sticks for more than 10 minutes. I'm afraid my French to the French must sounds like Borat's English to us. As my confidence diminishes so does the amount of French I'm prepared to speak for fear of getting it wrong. Has anyone got any hints which worked for them?

I was just thinking of some words and it's funny how, for example, Knife and Kniving. They both start with K and N, yet when you say Knife, the K is silent, but if you say Kniving, the K isn't. Why is that?

At first we had the Indian curry.

Now a novelist and teacher Baljinder Mahal has provided readers with a guide to her lively hybrid language with a new dictionary entitled "The Queen's Hinglish: How To Speak Pukka."

"Language is not set in stone. It is fluid and organic. Chaucer's English is not the same as Shakespeare's English," she said.

Well! what do you say?
