Well in "THE" there are 3 letters. In "ALPHABET" there are 8 letters.

If the question you ask really means 'how many letters are there in "The Alphabet" then in total there are 11, as 8 plus 3 equals 11.

Which alphabet do you mean?
In the NON Native American Anglicised with latinized Script Alphabet there are twenty-six letters.
Τhe Polish Alphabet is currently made up of 32 Latinized scripted letters. It seems that @ some poiint in time we used to have 35 letters. If you will note, the Polish Alphabet looks, in most instances, like the current version of the alpahbet that we use in the States. It is just that there are some extra letters that look like the ones that we use here but have a pronounciation mark. I believe that this is where some of the extra letters come into play.
Polish is one of the languages tha tmake up a group called Slavic.
It looks like tha tthe Slavic group was seperated into two different scripts based on which Catholic sect the language/country/people went with. If you were/are Roman (Western) Catholic, then your script looks Latinized. If you were/are Orthodox (Eastern) Catholic, then your script looks
Greek or Cyrillic.
Greek has twenty-four Capital letters letters in the Modern language and twenty-five Lower or small case letters becasue the letter Sigma has two versions when it comes to the smal (lower) case letter: σ (This version is used @ the beginning of a word or anywhere else expect @ the very end.), ς (This version is used @ the very end of a word.
Examples: στιν, κανεις, σιστησω, καλως
Greek also, like Polish, has some letters that look like the ones in the English Alpahebet.

The English Alphabet has 26 letters.

Other alphabets vary in number. For example, the Filipino (Philippine) Alphabet originally had 20 letters, it became 26 with the American Colonialism and at present has 28 letters. Although, the English Alphabet is the one being used since the two other letters, "ñ" and "ng" are only used in the dialect.

The longest alphabet is the Cambodian Alphabet.

If you are talking about the English alphabet, it is 26. If you are talking about the word alphabet, it is 8. If you are talking about another language, you have to specify the language.

Don't wander too far off when you count; you could get lost.
