The word has a number of meanings including 'difficult to handle to due size or shape', 'causing inconvenience', 'potentially embarrassing' and 'lacking grace'.

Why then do I see some people online using the word as if it simply means 'bad' or 'difficult' or 'wrong'?

Is it one of those words where a lot of people don't know what it actually means and is often used incorrectly? Or is this one of those situations where the meaning of a word changes over time? Has anyone else noticed what I'm talking about?

I'm fairly proficient in Spanish, but I don't really know how to get this idea across in Spanish.

I have a Spanish speaking friend that likes me, but I don't like him in *that* way. I'm planning out what to say when I tell him that I don't like him like that, but I want to let him know that I still want to be his friend. In English, I would want to tell him something like: "I would much rather be your friend than nothing at all."

I was thinking of something like this: "Pero preferiría más ser tu amiga que nada". Does that sound OK to you? It doesn't sound quite right to me, though I'm not sure why. Suggestions? Alter the phrasing as you see fit, because the idea might be a little hard to translate.

Muchas gracias

(PS-- Please, people, No online translators!! I may not be fluent, but I can tell when something sounds silly. Oh, and yes, I do know all the vulgar words, so none of that, please.)

i speak english, spanish and basic french. i need to learn italian for an internship i want to do in a year...so basically i have a year to learn...i cant go to italy before the internship because i will be in grad school and i cant take classes in school because that would increase my tuition immensely and i cant afford it. i know that knowing spanish will help me but im not sure i want to try to teach myself because i dont want to start learning it the wrong way!!

any suggestions?? any italian teachers/speakers that want to give me some pointers or lessons?

i will be moving to denver in late august and id really like to be able to have at least basic conversation skills by february or march. would this be possible??

I have always assumed "hawk" was the correct spelling, but recently read in a novel "Hock".

Here in the united states were always having immigrants coming to this country legally, i have no problem with that. The question is why is it alot of immigrants or illegals who come here from mexico will not learn english? MIddle easterns learn english, asians learn english, europeans learn english, and everyone else who is a non english speaking nation will learn or try their hardest to learn even if its broken english (i would like to thank all of you on trying to learn this language thank you), but why isnt mexicans learning this language, or even attemping to learn it?

I know I think the British accent sounds pretty rad, at least when coupled with some British vocabulary, but do any bona fide Brits—or people who speak with a similar accent—think that we Americans have desirable accents? Or do we just butcher every word that leaves our mouths?

I like the name Dana.
It is the name of a cartoon character i used to like when I was a kid. It means `the big pearl` in arabic. Is this name fashionable in U.S and Europe? Is it a wise choice for a baby girl?
