Here in the united states were always having immigrants coming to this country legally, i have no problem with that. The question is why is it alot of immigrants or illegals who come here from mexico will not learn english? MIddle easterns learn english, asians learn english, europeans learn english, and everyone else who is a non english speaking nation will learn or try their hardest to learn even if its broken english (i would like to thank all of you on trying to learn this language thank you), but why isnt mexicans learning this language, or even attemping to learn it?

mmm, good question. Before answering, I need to say that Mexicans are not stupid, Mexicans do not want to control the US, and that Mexicans do not think they are superior (actually, it usually happens the other way around).
Now, I DO think that if someone intends to live in the US, that someone should arrive to the country with at least an idea of the language and, if that's not possible, they should make their best to learn it. The problem is that usually the people who go to the US need many other thinkgs that are more important, I mean, what would you prefer? to eat or to learn a new language? Besides, most of them are not planning to stay there for a long period of time, so they think that learning English would be useless.
And also, some think that they can live without learning it (idea that is not mistaken)

Here are some of the reasons, still I think that they should try.

And, you should also remember that the Mexicans that only speak Spanish are not the only Mexicans that live over there but the ones you see the most. Every talented person (Mexican or not) that lives in the US is rarely noticed because they have a perfect English and because they act as normal Americans.

Here in Mexico (I am Mexican) lots of people are able to speak correctly your language, for example, I am 13 and I am not too bad at it, my brother's 10 and my cousin is 8 and they are able to speak and write it too.

Well, hope that helped a bit

Legal Immigrants get a lot of assistance that is NOT available to Illegal Immigrants, for example, free ESL (English As A Second Language) courses.

How do you think you would manage if for some reason you found yourself in a foreign country with no money, doing manual labor just to get by, how would you learn the language? If you could learn to speak it by just watching television or listening to the radio, how would you learn to write it? How easy do you think it would be for you to learn Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian?

Also keep in mind that EVERYONE in NORTH AMERICA is either an Immigrant or a descendant of an immigrant unless they are native indian. All of the people that came from countries other than Mexico were not necessarily "Legal Immigrants" either......

Is it really necessary for someone to learn English in our culture. Take into consideration math. El numeros, numbers. Whether you are in a Spanish or English stores numbers are the same. They are also the easiest and first thing someone learns in a language as they have to use currency.

Now, a long time ago my family came over here, my grandfather and I spent a summer and he has continued the genealogy work with my cousin and others in the family. A legacy of sorts. I know this is for sure. My ancestors had the human problem.

I myself take every opportunity I get to learn hello in another language, that and the curse words, LOL. Would you like me to share?

I speak some Spanish. I flunked it in school, d's, but I have learned by talking to my Friends from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and even Spain.

This is simply an issue of tolerance. Plain and simple. We need to tolerate these new and sometimes scary additions to our melting pot. They have something to offer. Do you know what the history of Chinese medicine is? What about he spirituality of a Hindu? Or the honesty of a Muslim. We are supposed to be the tolerant of America.

I agree completely. As an immigrant from South Africa (I grew up speaking Enghlish, though), I believe that everyone who wants to be in America should be able to be in America. But they have to contribute to society. And that includes speaking the language. How else are they going to find work and become a part of the American way? I understand that it's hard to learn a new language, expecially after the age of ten, but I'm not asking that people do it in a day. Many community colleges offer very cheap, sometimes free, English classes. If we were to go to Europe or South America or something, we would be expected to speak the respective languages. I have no problem with immigrants - like I said, I am one - but they should want to be a part of society.

Mexicans, and other hispanics, that immigrate are making great efforts to learn English. It simply is not true that they aren't. Typically, however, the first generation of immigrants from any country will learn their new country's language with mixed success. Their children, however, will grow up speaking English and be as fluent as "native" speakers. Finally, the grandchildren of the immigrants not only will speak English fluently, they will identify as Americans, not with their grandparents' country of origin. It just takes time and understanding.

At first, when I read your question, I was a little concerned about the direction of the question. I do agree with you on the count that english should be learned-not really spoken every day-but it needs to be learned so that people can interact within the society they are trying to be a part of. If you went to say Japan and demanded that English be the language-they would laugh at you. It wouldnt happen. I do think that English should be learned.

my opinion and this is only my opinion,Mexicans feel that they do not have to learn English because there are so many people in this country that either speak Spanish or a derivative of it and are doing just fine,so the fault really lies with the Americans that allow Spanish to replace English in most every facet of life.It should be a requirement that if you want to come to America from any foreign country you must be able to speak, write and understand English or you can't come in. Now I will await the attacks from every non English speaking countries support groups.

I knew recent Polish immigrants in school who didn't speak a word of English I used to end up having to help them most of the time I was able to find a Polish speaking teacher or one of my friends to help me too. I don't know why some don't bother to learn English I just assume they're lazy or they really don't want to be here and someone else is making them stay.

And not all immigrants learn English. You just hate all immigrants, which you try to hide under the issue that Mexican people have problems learning English. You are a DAMN RACIST you NAZI !!!...I WOULD PAY TO SEE YA WRITE TWO WORDS IN SPANISH; ESTUPIDO!!! And by the way, go ahead and report me, anyways it won't change my mind... YOU'RE STILL A RACIST !!

People, let me know what ya'all think, I am really interested.

I couldn't agree with you more, I live in Texas, so you can imagine how many times I come across someone that can't speak English. I think if they want to live here they need to learn our language, BUT instead we make all these changes for them!!!(having things in Spanish and English) that's just not right. BTW, I'm not being racist I'm married to a Hispanic, born and raised in Texas.
