It's a funny feeling I get when I realise I don't belong to my own nation, that I should have been brought to life in a different part of the world. For that particular country, I have a great sense of love and attachment, I love the language, the food, the music. Am I alone with this problem?

Looking at the questions listed here, I'm reminded just how much the English language is falling apart. I mean, there's a SPELL CHECKER provided here, and people STILL are spelling things wrong!

What is causing the demise of proper grammar and word usage? Is it the overly-casual typing patterns that we all use now? Is it the proliferation of ebonics into daily culture? Is it irreversible? Is it just a trend?

I teach English as a second language (ESL) as a volunteer to immigrants who live under the poverty level, but have no formal training, so please forgive my ignorance. I know that "this" (near) and "that" (distant) are demonstratives and that "it" is a pronoun, but I couldn't articulate a rule for deciding when to ask "What is this?" vs. "What is it?"

It would be really helpful for vocab learning. And they could still alphabetize them in each individual section.. So why don't they do this? Am i going to have to make my own dictionary just to lead the example?

This is Peter. May I know when I should arrive on my first working day? What sort of things that I need to prepare before coming to ABC?

Look forward to hearing from you soon!

I read this in the "cat" section and there doesn't seem to be any corresponding expression in my own language.

Hopefully somebody with a bit of intelligence will get what I'm trying to ask.
Let's go back in time to when we were evolving. We must have been able to communicate in some way. When we developed the ability to communicate with words, would we have been able to describe past communications or experiences? Could this be how we developed the idea of Gods or supernatural activities?
It's quite hard to describe what I'm trying to put across but bear with me please. Let's say that a volcanic eruption was witnessed by one generation (before language) this was communicated down a few generations (how? I don't know). When language started to develop, would this perhaps have been described as "Great fire from the sky" or something to that effect? and as vocabulary increased so did elaboration of the observation of said volcano, this in turn gets mis interpretted further down the line as some unworldly phenomena? as it's always human nature to try and personify something.
